Continuing the Emma And Ash sketchbook.

Back to where we left the story rough outline :
After Emma and Ash have seen to the medical needs of the stricken colony the local tribes help out by bringing food - and negotiations. The colonist can starve or join the tribes if they are found worthy - but Dellin's older brother will not be allowed to land - there will be no new governor.
Emma tells Ash that it will now be much safer for Ash to live in the cage in her stable with her horse so that they can secretly be together. Later Emma can't find Ash or Teesha or Chaser. She realizes he has left her again.With shaking paws she takes out the photograph she made of Ash eight years ago - and a bottle of whiskey - it had been her habit since he first left to look at his photo as she drank herself to sleep. But her tears turn into cries of agony and she throws the photo into the flames of her fireplace. She screams and throws in the bottle of whiskey which shatters - flames spreading out across the floor - up the drapes. Emma is doubled over sobbing as her home burns down around her. Finally she unlocks a drawer on her desk and takes out a pistol. She holds it in her lap as the flames spread around her.
Cut to Ash, Teesha, and Chaser on the outskirts of the colony.
As they pass by a Tiger Guard patrol the Captain informs Ash that they're letting him go for all the help he gave after the eruption/quake - but if they ever see him he will be shot on sight. Ash and company travel on for awhile until Ash suddenly freezes. He can't leave Emma again. He tells Teesha and Chaser to go to the coyote village - the coyotes owe him their lives and will take good care of the kids if he doesn't make it back. Ash starts running back through the forest.
Ash encounters the Tiger Guard again and the Captain smiles and raises his rifle just as Emma rides up on her horse, her pistol pointed at him. The Captain's grin grows broader, " Little drunk bitch doctor, have you noticed there are a dozen of us and you with your little pistol that you've never fired in your life?" Walker and Hestaphia ride up behind Emma with pistols drawn and aimed. The Captain starts to shout a command and Walker puts a bullet between his eyes (payback for the beating of Hestaphia earlier in the story). Three more tigers go down as they try to return fire. The remaining tigers drop their guns and raise their arms "You are acting Governor Mister Walker, we are you loyal guard to command."
(rough dialogue)
Emma to Ash : You left me. Again.
Ash (shakes head) : No. I tried. I cannot. You can put me in your cage.
E : My house and the cage are burned down. We'll try it your way - i've packed my manuscript, microscope, telescope and camera - so I'll try to live at your coyote village.
A : You know that was never an option. The colony would be outraged, they would send people to 'rescue' you and slaughter the village.
E : Then we just keep traveling ....
A : There are many hostile tribes here. We would be enslaved or killed.
E : There has to be someplace...
A : ... We will return to my home in the northern mountains of the Wolf Clans. I will be put on trail for my mistakes. They need to know about what happened in the underworld - that there are demons coming. They will welcome you and the children ... and some day I might be released.
etc Story ends somewhere around here etc
So "Emma In Paradise" is not a heaven of some sort after she kills herself, it's up in the norther Wolf Clan mountains where she and Ash have both been honored - she has her own shaman staff so that she can interface with the remaining underworlds as they prepare for the arrival of the demons in a couple hundred years.
So that's the basic outline of the story, but leaving out lots of dramatic stuff so as to keep plenty of surprises etc for the eventual tale.

The cut away was a classic suspense trope, cliche because effective - there is other story stuff that sets this scene up a bit better ... There was a version they were shot by the tiger guard as the ran towards each other.
Miyazaki's first draft of Nausicaa had her being killed, but he thought "No, i can't do to people."
Anyway the unhappy ending wasn't my original draft - first version was that Emma Ash Teesha and Chaser go to Ash's homeland - the wolf clan northern mountains.
