Questionable Quest (Hypnovember 2020)
Tales tell of a young, unique fey corgi, an adventurous canine cross cervine who has been told to have travelled treacherous lands and taken on legendary, similarly pint-sized quests.
Tackling the horrible hobbes of Albion, Smacking the putrid undead of Gallowmere, and lashing at the lubricious lizalfos of Hyrule.
The deergi gave a relieved sigh, stretching and resting his poor paws fitted into his loyal yet smelly boots, having reached the entrance of the enchanted forest, a place of magic, wonder, mystery and most of all trees, but also adventure!
The clanging of his armour and weapons halting as he looked up from his map, studying the tall dark trees looming over the entrance like an archway, the green, lush grass’s gradient becoming darker and blue, puddles, mushrooms and stumps scattered across as the wildlife explored and played in its busy landscape, contrasting the open hills and farmlands Duski had scampered across to get here.
Scrunching up his map and slipping it into his satchel's side, pulling out a humble sized, worn, well-loved notebook from his lightweight chest plate, he reviewed his quest, his inner monologue and tasks detailed neatly as a clear to-do list.
Off-course Call of the Wild:
Multiple corgis of Barkingham castle have been reported missing, with last sightings entering the local woods. Warnings from the residents of the area state the land was inhabited by fairies, and the forest had been ravaged by magical wars many many moons ago.
Among the lost is the Queen corgi's royal adviser, with a hefty bounty for his safe return.
- Reach the enchanted forest: Done.
- Track the missing persons: in progress
- ???
- Reward!
Duski tucked away his notebook and tugged on the shaft of his wide, trusty yet stubby short sword and buckler on his back, rummaging though his satchel and checking his stock of empty glass bottles and potions, as well as his trophy collection of socks stolen from critical hits before nodding with a determined huff, and setting forth into the woods...
There was a well trampled path through the forest where many merchants and adventurers wondered, the tall trees surrounding the fey corgi as they towered over him, blocking the scorching sun except for glimmering god rays illuminating the magical mystery living and breathing, the forest alive… more so than the dog could know...
The deergi marched forward, taking in the sights and sniffing around, looking for clues, loot and precious materials, if the legends were true, a bottled fairy could grant many of the corgi's wishes, his health maximised, his strength dramatized, his magic powered, or he could simply become a great deal heavier with coins.
The forest sung a melody of croaks, buzzes and coos, but Duski's ears twitched as he heard an out of rhythm rustle, his lightning instincts reaching back and clutching his swords hilt as he heard a puddle splash in the distance, before the scent of another fey corgi hit his sensitive nose, his guard lowering slowly as the scent became stronger, the dog bursting into a sprint on all fours as he followed the smell as he entered the belly of the forest, going deeper and deeper into darkness...
His tiny trotters moved quickly, kicking up dust, dirt and grass as the wind rustled though his fur, his ears folded back as he could hear an ethereal giggle calling to him, causing him to look before crashing into a tree, falling back with a whine onto his gear causing him to exhale in a pained groan, wriggling on the floor for a moment before slowly sitting up, clutching his aching head as his vision came back into focus, just fast enough to glimpse a sizeable vine slithering towards him!
The Dog fell back, holding his left arm out to catch himself as his right paw grasped his sword and slammed down in front of him, cutting the vine in two as it became lifeless, leaking a thick, golden nectar from its hardening stem.
Duski slowly came to his feet, trying not to make a sound as he studied the situation, before his ears twisted like a satellite as his leg gave way, diving into a roll as a vine shot past him, stabbing into the floor!
As the dog came to his feet, he just as quickly dashed forth, wielding his sword as pulled back to swing, and suddenly crashing down to the floor with another vine tackling him, coiling around his chest and yanking him up into the trees as he instinctively howled, echoing though the forest, his sword plunging into the dirt with a solemn “chit”.
The deergi was hoisted up into the trees, smacking against layers of leaves with bothered borks before the coil unravelled and let go, Duski flailing and spinning in a blur, yelping as the wind distorted his cries before 4 more vines snatched onto his arms and legs with deadly precision, holding him between the forked branches of a great oak tree has his head still span, a dazed look in his eyes giving soft, little whines.
As he came back to his senses, managing to hold in his lunch, he saw a sable figure scamper towards him on the broad branches of the trees, a... Corgi!
On all fours, wearing a harness and saddle, pouches along his figure as he jingled coming closer, the dwarfed figure riding him hooded and cloaked.
This corgi seemed... Strange~
It didn't seem bothered by being ridden, in fact, it seemed very happy, panting and looking around, easily distracted, content and tame, with no other expression than mindless complacency.
"H-Hey! A little help?" The corgi pleaded, his optimism falling to a frown as his head tilted, his ears flopping back as the contemporary corgi just... Barked at him...
"I am afraid this dwarf dog may not be quite what you think it is any more..." The figure said politely, a soft, high pitched voice escaping the cloak as the rider removed it and placed it over their companion, a set of glassy, sapphire wings emerging from their back with a twinkle as they floated effortlessly, grabbing a decorated, lengthy staff from their steed and turning their attention to the trapped traveller at hand.
Duski's ears perked in surprise as a fairy reviled itself to him, the tales of the fairy forest deep among the tall tall trees true! Filling him with a sense of wonder and complete dread, remembering the stories told to the pups of the town of magical creatures who would kidnap those who wondered into the forests alone at night, as if those rumoured lost souls were haunting him at that very moment as he began to panic, wriggle and grunt.
The delicate hand holding the staff glowed as the fairy swung her staff towards the dog, a vine tendril slipping down and precisely filling the gobsmacked prey's open maw as he gave a muffled mmph!
The vine began to ooze an incredibly sweet nectar, a thick, delicious goop which made his tongue tingle, and his jaw slacken in appreciation, the sensation moving down his throat as the lump in his throat seemed to melt away, Duski's low, half-open eyes widening as he realised he wasn't relaxing of his own accord, becoming paralysed as he sank into his organic shackles, his resistance fading more and more as the ooze continued to dribble down his gullet.
The fairy's wings fluttered and beat together as it moves closer to the dogs face, holding the staff out in front and it swirling around, the gemstone fitted at its head sparkling and leaving a light trail that began to spiral with the movements, 2 more corgis dashing forth to meet with the first as their riders floated up above the sunken dog, sprinkling pouches of fairy dust over the adventurer as he was overwhelmed by the magic at hand, his nose twitching and his eyes so heavy as the dust tickled his senses, and the dazzling spell cast in front of him taking control as he felt his mind slow, becoming more feral as the sap sapped him of energy.
“You shall work the fairy cattle.
You shall pull the fairy coaches.
You shall be steed for fairy riders.
You shall be the fairy children’s playmate.
Keep them hidden in the mountains.
Keep them shadowed in the lee.
Lest the eye of mortal man see.”
The fairy commanded, continuing their spell over the creature.
The trio of corgis howled in the presence of the fairies magic, as Duski's ears twitched as he attempted to howl in unison, prompted by his kin to follow the fairies lead as his eyes swirled, matching the glowing trail before him, moaning softly as his mind could only focus on one thing, not minding as the two fairies began to lighten the adventurer of his worn, dirty armour and fit the canine with his new saddle, their dust having been expended on the confused canine, with the saddle fitting perfectly over the black markings on his back as it it were destined for him, his purpose now the serve the fairies as it always should have been.
The drool dripping vine slipped out of the canine’s maw as it hanged open, the dog’s long tongue unravelling and hanging out as he panted, his nose shiny and moist with his tail wagging gently, simply being a good dog as the fairies continued the wild spell over the once mildly popular knight, taming the beast as he paid all of his attention to his new masters, the leader swishing their staff to them as the vines presented their new pet, gently placing them on the same solid branch as the others helped bind the corgi’s mouth and head with reigns, attaching them to the leaders mount as they lead their new domesticated animal back home, made to live a life of servitude, as if he knew any different any more…
Quest Failed.
