I imagine the captors weren't quite so familiar with Boris being a shapeshifter or they'd perhaps have known to use something a little sturdier than relatively flimsy ropes. Still it's allowed him to dramatically burst free from his bindings and with a rather decent rhyme, and I imagine there will follow a dynamic action sequence as he makes his escape and perhaps beats up a few bad guys in the process.
