One of my favorite Disney song of all time. Originally preformed by Rodger Miller.
I especially liked doing this recording a lot for three reasons.
1. its one of the best songs ever to written for a Disney movie
2. It gives me a chance to let my south western accent shine a bit
3. it gave me an excuse to use my Epiphone E0-2 which doesn't nearly get enough time out of its case.
I'm trying new mic placements and still trying to come up with something that will work with my style of recording. The problem is if I place it 6 inches from my face I tend to be too loud and pick up hardly any guitar and if I place it further away I get great guitar but quite indistinct vocals:/ if any one has suggestions I'm all ears. So far the most even thing I have come up with is this weird style of overhead micing that involves pointing the mic at a half and half angle from about a foot above my mouth.
That being said I think my singing by itself has been greatly improving this year. I'm really happy with the progress I'm making on my guitar playing too
Lyrics and the chords I'm using:
C
Every town
F
Has its ups and down
C
Sometime ups
G
Outnumber the downs
C
But not in Nottingham
F
I'm inclined to believe
C
If we were so down
G C
We'd up and leave
F
We'd up and fly if we had wings for flyin'
C
Can't you see the tears we're cryin'?
F G
Can't there be some happiness for me?
G
Not in Nottingham
isn't it funny that a song this sad doesn't have a single minor chord?

Depends on what type of mic you're using. I use a condenser mic, and I pretty much have to stand about 5 feet from the mic, sitting at about chest level to get decent levels for both guitar and vocals. Here's my best example >.> http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3791916 .
And great job, by the way. The vocals came out loud, but your voice is great ^^.

yeah its a wide diaphragm condenser. Rode NT1-A.
i have had luck recording like that one that you linked (which is really excellent btw) but only if I'm doing chords and heavy strumming. Its this soft finger picking stuff that i have trouble balancing:/
I might just break down and see if I can get a second mic for the guitar so I can just mix them separately.

With your talent, I honestly thing that it would be worth the investment to get a 2nd mic ^^. And I'll have to agree...a lot of my original songs use fingerpicking, and I usually have to resort to recording my vocals and guitar separately.
I actually got very lucky with that recording...took a lot of messing with my mic settings to get the right sound on that one xD. And thanks, it's good to know that I finally got it right xD.

I'll need to sell a few CD's or something for that one. Perhaps you have some expensive guitar work that you need done? jk
Yeah I think I'm definitely going to try picking something up here in future. Maybe even a good dynamic like a Sure 57. But I'm kinda eying a pair of little condensers like the ones Colson uses. I happen to like XY micing my guitar when I can. It seems to sound a bit better in the final mix. I mean hell, why not. the guitar itself is worth about 3 grand, it's worth it to spend a little extra to record it accurately.

Well thats quite easy when their two separate tracks or you happen to not sing in the same range as your intrument. I have had luck balancing recording done with mandolin and Roquinto in post but unfortunately a bass/tenor vocal can'nt be separated from a guitar on a equalizer :/
i already have a not cheap one:P I use a fast track pro for my interface that has two XLR/quarter inch inputs made by M-audio. The problem is that I don't have two mics. I have a fairly good large diaphragm condenser and ok a low power cardioid condenser as well as a few passable dynamic mics. I think the answer is raising money for a second good mic.
those arnt bad mics I'm a Sennheisser fan boy in fact. They simply don't make a bad product. I might try looking around pawn shops and seeing what i can dig up. Who knows, I found a nice Spanish classical at one a few weeks ago for only $500. Didn't get it bu ti proves that there are bargains to be had.
pawn shops sometimes irritate me when I'm looking at guitars. I typically see used instruments being sold for original retail price that have some issues. I realize that you can occasionally talk them down but its still annoying to think that there is some poor guy that is overpaying for these things. Be careful dealing with those places.
Id invest in a second mic. It seems like there are points when your voice gets too full for the mic to handle with where you have it. Ive been quite happy with how my mic works at just about any distance...I usually record vocals at a distance and the few string things ive done a bit closer, but all around its a nice system. Just have to turn the input down as low as possible lol
Play around with mics till you find one that works well at a variety of placements.
