Beneath the Demon’s smolder gaze he signed his name. The red demon bowed his head and smiled. Then from behind a cold wind blew the hero down. He fell forward, but instead of cold stone, his hands slid on a massive sheet of ice.
As he looked up, struggling to find balance - he found the room, the demon - everything was changed. Instead he stood on a frozen river an endless prison of ice. He shivered - this wasn’t the deal!
There was nothing - just the howling of the winds, and a low moan of the souls that drifted in this tormented place. The hero knew that signing was a mistake - and now he had to find shelter quickly, before he froze to death. He trudged over the snow and ice, falling more than once. Even so, every-time he slid or tripped he got back up - feeling stronger each time. As he struggled along that cursed river, he felt a warmth building up, he felt more powerful, even as the wind howled against him.
Soon he wasn’t even struggling, he was in his element. He felt his shoes tear open - they could no longer contain him. None of his human trappings did more than restrain his developing demonic form. A great mane whipped in the wind, and his changing eyes found the way back to the path, which wound between the chained ice. His spiked flicked into being, tearing against the icy air.
A sharp pain in the abdomen, and new limbs burst forward. Stronger hooves at the end of four powerful legs, propelled him carefully off the ice back onto the cursed road. A demonic centaur galloped down the path, taking a weapon to get these wayward souls back in line.
***
Agezazel poured another goblet, another threat parried away from his chest, and he didn’t even have to dirty his beloved sword’s blade. As promised he provided an excellent hunter for the forlorn river, and Cocytus could meet their soul-quota once again.
Sometimes it really was too easy.
