An old doodle that I just finished up in a few spare minutes today.
A lot of times, people mistake my mouse drawings for rats, and vice versa.
I understand this is partly my fault for probably not drawing the species as distinct enough from one another (though that doesn't excuse people's inability to glance slightly to the right and see the species tag).
I kid, it really doesn't bother me. But I imagine it would bother a rat to be confused with a 'lesser' species. Kinda like someone confusing a human for a chimp, I guess.
I have nothing against mice, seriously, they're adorable. But rats do tend to like to munch on them.
So this sprung out of my head. Tis just Hoffman threatening a mouse with death.....which is always nice.
I drew Hoffman only because I like drawing him right now, and he has a gun (which I can't draw). But goddamn WHY do I always draw Hoffman too fat?! He's meant to be one of those big, chunky, squishy dumbo bucks you get, but I think I've made him possibly a good 100grams too heavy.
I might try and slim him down a little next time. Maybe he should stop eating donuts, though I am informed thats the natural cop diet.
Because I was asked, Hoffman is a Sable Burmese dumbo, like this beastie: http://img28.imageshack.us/i/sableburmese0jx.jpg/
Its a fairly uncommon rat variety, and I've made his face markings darker than it tends to be on real Burms, but yes....thats is what he be.
All my rat characters are supposed to be recognised varieties, even if they're not great examples. If you ever wanna know what they are, just ask! I'd like to do a guessy game thing with them to see if people can guess what they are, but I don't know if I have enough ratty people watching me to make it worthwhile.
I crow-barred my fat self into the background just BECAUSE. Because you all love me and want to bask in my glory, I know it, admit it :3

Or us ratters bein' called 'possums! Bloody hell!
Sorry, channeling Mona Ratt fer a sec, there. I'm usually a dragon- folks don't seem to confuzzle those with anything else. *giggle*
Oh, and this pic is beautifully done! When I realized those wee dots were nipples, I about squeeeed. No one draws the proper amount of nipples on a character, if at all. No, I don't have a thing fer nips- nope, just little details like that make me day. And the scaling on Hoffman's tail- perfect!

I think the main thing with mice is the ears are so much larger in proportion to the body than rats, and they tend to have cute little muzzles whereas rats have big fat blocky ones! My rats occasionally eat mice that manage to get into their cage and steal their food. It was quite a shock the first time I found the pelt and tail and back legs left in my girl's cage!
Most of the time, though, I don't think they're fast enough to catch them. I've seen them run across my boy's play area before and one of them actually sat huddled under Warlock's front legs for a few seconds and he didn't even realise it was there! :P

Yeah I saw those as differences too, especially the ears.
My rat never had the chance for a mouse because my cat always got to them first XD She did encounter the hamster though and sniffed him curiously. He nipped her nose lightly and she figured that hamsters weren't for her and hid in my hair. Borris my cat hates hamsters because when he was quite young, he managed to get up on the shelf where the cage was and pull it off on top of him. The hamster was unharmed but ever since, Borris now thinks they are big scary creatures that launch their cages at you XD
