Just so people can see a part of what I've been up to when I say non-animal related" art. This is apart of a page (in line art form) of a book project that I've been working on. I've had it for a while (sadly) but it kept getting put to the side... gotten another big project... picking up a new style methods and time just keeps passing faster than I know (have develop a "no sense in date or day of the week" miraculously I still get my bills paid on time and I don't show up at work on the weekends lol)... blah blah blah.
Anyways it's a great children's book written by my good friend

and I've made it a promise that I'll finish it by the end of this summer to pitch. Don't know how she'll feel about me showing a sneak peek BUT... she doesn't even know that I'm this far or not this far and have set it to be finished... SURPRISE!!! The sketches have been finished for a while... *cough cough a year and a half (i was drawing them when she was here)... >.> and the story board was finished ummm I won't say. But as of memorial day weekend (spent the whole 4 day weekend) getting the final sketches in my computer and doing the line art.
15 of the pages are complete and ready for paint. Originally it was going to be done in watered acrylic and one of them was actually fully painted and all of them were finished drawings but with new times calls for evolution and I've been trying to evolve my digital paintings so they look more traditionally. So they are about a age and a half from being done for the book dummy. Which will be this weekend. Way for setting a goal and doing it.

Yeah... I like painting better than digital myself... but I keep getting told that I need to evolve if I want to make it. So I've experimenting and am going to try and make it look like a painting. Which means I'll have to import 1000s of textures and filter the hell out of things but it's an amazing story and if it means I have to switch to digital to get it published... I'll do it. It deserves to be out there. On the plus side I got to rework some of the features that I wasn't happy with.
And I haven't mentioned it to anyone except maybe my mom but I'll be engulfed it a lot more digital stuff... so I'm hoping to power of my digital style to look more like traditional stuff because I (may be doing something insanely stupid and will put me in a deeper swell of college loans) will possibly be "going back to school" for possibly a second degree. It's not 100% yet... like John says crap like that all the time, but I actually emailed the school advisor for more information yesterday to at least give me an idea of what I might be doing is a good or bad idea.
Well I hope you will still consider actually painting the scenes by hand anyway because I think they would look amazing. I think if you submitted it that way it would be really eye-catching. Yeah everything is digital nowadays, but that's why I think it would stand out. Digital definitely is more popular these days but if anything I think children's books are perfectly suited for traditional media and that it wouldn't hurt your chances but make you stand out more from the crowd of digital.
I actually made one of the paintings a long time ago (the opening scene) and loved how it came out; but as time goes on even my old professors in college are getting pressured into going into digital. They even saying "we know we have to but we love the feel of paint" and really that's my only reason for not forcing myself to get into digital... because I like mixing paint and I like the softness. I understand the benefits of digital but I know my stubbornness of liking the feel of paint will only get me so far at my age. Publishers except younger artist to have that capability. In the commercial arts field traditional arts is losing its appreciation if you don't already have a name. And when you pitch the book ideas they don't see the originals... cause you won't get them back. You just send in a few small prints and the dummy and cross your fingers because most of time they just throw your submission away. And even if you get a bite... since digital art has risen in popularity sooo much... publishers are wanting things now with now hassle. If they don't have to take the time out to photograph your work... all the better. So I'm hoping to make my digital work look closer to watercolor acrylic... my last attempt looks like pastel >.< but at least I'm going in the right direction. And I'm hoping that since I worked in a publishing house (the job I had before the one I have now) and know the book layout program and can practically have the book ready for print for them... we may have more leverage. But not to worry... I won't stop working on it until I know we'd both be satisfied. It's publication would be GREAT for both of us.
