At least he was tired of it by the third session as well. Happens when you've just done rolling the extra crit damage for having a berserk weapon that boosts crit damage until it's about ten dice that are reroll ones and twos, and then thanks to being a Deva you get another crit and have to do it all again.
I dislike the players I DM for for their habit of (entirely within the rules and correctly) pasting "boss" characters into the ground in two critical hit filled turns.
So I made regenerating bosses with DR 15 and able to one shot kill them with crits... also correctly and within the rules.

My level 12 Dwarf King has a Vorpal Short Sword +3 to go with his Dwarven Battle Ax of Cleaving +5, but that was old school D&D with a DM that used a random draw for magic weapons. The DM made him a king to get rid of him because he had become too powerful and couldn't move up any more by the old rules. Also may have been because I seem to have a knack for rolling 20s at imposable times and at that point that meant instant death for any thing. That was many years ago.
D&D is no board game, let me assure you of that.
It's technically a "pen and paper" RPG, meaning that the important things are the sheets with the statistics on and the dice, and the board is just a visual aid and can be graph paper or even just memory, to keep track in combat.
The books for the game provide the stats for the Dungeon Master (in other words, the ajudicator) to run the monsters, the adventures and the world, while the people playing the characters essentially try to enjoy themselves in the world. This world can be richly detailed or it can be basic, but as the DM has to run it it usually depends on his free time... Hence the world often "loses definition" somewhat around exam time...
Dragons are in the name of the game because they're the nastiest things to fight in the game. Often faster, stronger, tougher and smarter than the entire group of adventurers put together and having lived for centuries, essentially any dragon battle is going to be memorable, so hence the name.
Dungeons are there due to the fantasy stereotype of adventuring through the catacombs below the surface of the world (eg Moria)... you can play an entire adventure without either but usually that means fighting either beasties or a war.
It really is a marvellous experience and the interaction between the group is a good reason to play in reality as it were rather than on the computer.
...Holy crap I wrote a lot there.

Mine was mostly a joke about how absurd a vorpal weapon can be. You know, OMG papercut on my finger EEP my head just fell off.. That kinda thing.
It's just a peice of paper really. You can write on it, use it for spell scrolls, but there's always a chance that as you're handling it, it might kill you.

I get the thing about Vorpals (and they are stupid overpowered, it's a flat chance per attack of INSTANT DEATH), just thought the NWN2 weapon was a funny parallel.
My favorite thing, though, is the Locate City Bomb. Heard of that?
Locate city (10 miles/level burst)
+Flash Frost feat (I think that's what it's called, it means 2pts of cold damage over entire area of spell)
+ Lightning element substitution
+Born of three thunders (1pt lightning, 1pt sonic, and deafened save vs fort)
+(as it now has a save DC) Explosive spell (those that fail save thrown to edge of area, taking 1d6 damage per 10 feet travelled.).
Now look at the spell area again.
Now make your spell save DC impossible to meet, cast the spell at around LVL 13, and WIPE OUT WALES.
