Very simple actually: o = one eye. 3 = puckered lips. o = another eye. "o3o". Ally sees it, I see it, many people see it.

Hardly a stretch at all, however, the narrow-minded simpleton find it difficult to see any relation between an "Emoticon" and a facial expression in reality. Quite sad really.

I have more bugs in my head than a hundred copies of Windows ME. I have enough trouble parsing facial expressions when I see real people, let alone text renderings as far removed from what they're supposed to represent as "o3o" is from a picture of two kissing faces.

I'm highly autistic and I can still understand facial expressions - if you can't, you're more disabled then I am.

Also - "o3o" is not 'Two kissing faces' - it's ONE face with puckered lips.

One face? Try as I might, I am unable to parse it as that.

The closest I can get to parsing that string as a single object just results in a disturbing mental image.

A traditional smiley is a simplification of an expression. Stating that "o3o" represents a single face with puckered lips is an abstraction.
