Vera La Tiérra - FBA Draft Prospect 2010 - Colored
Name - Vera La Tiérra
Nickname - Acróbata
Species - Red Vixen
Gender - Female
Position - Guard
Age - 20
Height - 6'3"
Weight - 175
Birthplace - Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Description - With a nickname that translates into 'Acrobat', this hispanic sensation has taken the basketball court and the entire country of Puerto Rico by storm... and stolen most of their hearts, as she has appeared in Latin community magazine "Criatura" (critter)'s Top 30 sexiest athletes list for the last 3 years (since turning of age 18... Rank 8 is her highest showing). However, she hasn't just garnered national attention for her looks. She earned the attention with a skill set so unique to the game of basketball, that coaches are not sure how to stop her.
Nicknamed "Acróbata" because of her hanging, acrobatic shots in the paint, she is blessed with elite athleticism and a keen knowledge of the game. A wonder on the offensive and defensive ends, she holds the school records for 3 pointers, assists, steals, and blocks (for a guard) in a season, which, when combined with her highlight reel moves around defenders and those jaw-dropping, leaning, twirling, fading layups, is an accomplishment to behold.
Her only real weakness is she has the tendency to showboat and occasionally tries to win the game all by herself. She has the talent for it, but she needs a coach that will emphasize the team aspect of the game. Her assist stats will tell you she knows how to share the ball, but she needs to be reminded of it sometimes. That and her ego will sometimes lead her to try and "match" opponents play for play, which again, coaching will help, as she is a very coachable player for the most part. She tends to get excited if she hits a good shot and will come down the court next time and fire a more difficult shot to see if she's still hot, which can lead to overall poor shot selection. She's at her best when she's playing team driven ball and is focused on taking good shots and making good decisions with the ball. But she's still a hell of a cover 1 on 1 though, and giving her the ball and telling her to "make something happen" is still not that bad of a coaching strategy.
The Puerto Rican basketball league is practically on their knees to keep her playing there, but she has made the decision to declare for the FBA Draft and follow her dream to ball with the highest level of competition in the world. And with her level of skill, quickness, agility, and good looks, she is bound to make a great impact on the league the second she joins.

Just a quick sketch I made of my character Vera, who has declared for the 2010 FBA Draft. I was trying to decide what species she should be, and I decided I'm quite partial to her being a vixen, mostly because she then would coincide with a vixen character I've already thought of named Vera (so they can be the same character, just one is in the FBA Universe ^^).
Also I wanted to see how fast I could sketch her if I didn't concentrate on making everything perfect. The sketch went quite fast, but I got caught up in details when I went to color her and it took too long. But that was only because she's my character and the details are kinda important, heh. If I do the sketch commissions like I'm thinking of doing, I'd already know the character's details and I could concentrate on drawing it quickly. ;)
Hope she gets drafted high! I'll be a bit sad if she doesn't land on my team, but she'll make a great addition to anyone's roster! :D

And this has anything to do with the picture...? You know, a lot of artists such as JT put a lot of time and effort to sketch out and personify a character. Whether you like her or not, I'm pretty sure the statement which you made was pretty much downright rude.
Just because you are sick of people having "flawless, superhumanly talented" fursonas, doesn't mean you need to rain on someone else's parade to get your point across. If you really have that much of a problem with it, then make a B'awwwww journal and leave other's out of it. Comment on the person's art skill, not attack them on a personal level.
Sorry if I went a little overboard JT, I just had to say something. :P Great picture, and I'm pretty sure the league will be proud to have that "flawless, superhumanly talented" vixen on any team. I would! ^_^

Right, because you can totally tell everything about a character from one little sketch.
Is it because she's a vixen and she looks attractive, like so many other vixens in the fandom? Because if that's all you're going off of here you're assuming a lot about a character that so far has a rough summary and one sketch to her name.
And I doubt you know this or even care, but the FBA (Furry Basketball Association, which this character was created for) kind of depends on their characters to be talented in order for the whole thing to work. The good looks are a bonus in this particular instance, but it's certainly not a given for every player. And no, she's not flawless, but it's pretty hard to know all the intricacies of her character just from one picture.
Rather than spotting a picture on the front page and making a knee-jerk assumption about the character and my character building skills, I suggest you have a look at the FBA website, and have a look at how much insane detail goes into the creation of 24 teams and over 350 unique characters, many of which I was directly involved with making, and all the stats, stories and development that goes along with every one of them.
Basically, you should look at more than a tiny piece of the big picture before jumping to conclusions like you know what you're talking about.

Oh, my bad, I thought the information provided was ample enough to critique your character building. I guess I'm not sufficiently telepathic to understand what a FBA is. People like you and JenJew up there are the reason I so rarely provide criticism on art, because you seem to think that by uploading things it's an automatic ticket to "OMG THIS IS AMAZING!" comments instead of actual "hey, this needs work" critiques. There's nothing wrong with talented or strong characters but every superman/woman needs their kryptonite, and I'm not seeing any. The reason for the sarcasm was because people do this all the time with absolutely zero effort to improve.
The reason I'm defensive about your "critique" if you want to call it that is that you do so based on a simple sketch and a small summary. I don't know how you expect to know enough about a character from a small summary to assume she doesn't have any other personality traits or quirks that aren't mentioned right off. It's a summary, so of course it's not going to tell the full picture.
I guess I should have mentioned that she doesn't get all that many rebounds or tends to showboat too much on the court or doesn't like broccoli or tends to toy with potential dates or had an alcoholic mother growing up or failed math in 5th grade. It's just a rough summary trying to make her look good so she can get drafted. I will eventually get around to writing a longer, more detailed caption, but this is just a brief introduction.
It's annoying because yes, she IS a deeper, more detailed character than what's on the surface, but you assume that the brief description is all there is to her and accuse me of shallow character building based on that.
And to be honest, your sarcastic one-liner "critique" doesn't necessarily make me want to think about the opinion you provide and try to improve the character. It's not all about "OMG AWESOME" comments, and critique can be helpful of course, but maybe if you had actually voiced your opinion in a polite and productive manner, I could have told you more about her and then even went into the description to include some of that information. I still might, but I don't want to feel like I'm being pressured to do so because of a sarcastic comment, I want to do so to actually improve the character.
Your rude tone just illicits a rude response though, which might be why most people don't take too kindly to your "critiques". I understand that people do make "flawless" characters a lot and it can get annoying if it happens all the time, but projecting that built up annoyance onto me suddenly when I'm not aware of your feelings on that just seems like a personal attack out of nowhere. Just say "Nice character, but it seems like she's perfect at everything. Does she have any weaknesses?" And I'd be happy to tell you about them, or think harder on it and write it in the description.

Name - Alex Mastiffson
Nickname - Bowling Ball
Species - Dog (1/4 English Mastiff / 1/4 Old English Sheepdog / 1/4 German Shepherd / 1/4 Wolf
Gender - Male
Position - Forward
Age - 18
Height - 6'8"
Weight - 300 lbs
Birthplace - Airdrie, Canada
College - University of Calgary
Alex Mastiffson is the youngest child of former FBA player Bryn Mastiffson. Although born into the musical Mastiffson/Cragg family, he jokes he can barely carry a note, which is why it's a good thing basketball players are expected to rap rather than sing. Because he has fairly mixed genes, he looks like a thick-set black wolf.
While he has good blocks and shots, he rarely goes for 3-pointers. He tries to play a "slashing" game like his idol Buck Hopper, but has a habit of sending opponents flying in all directions like bowling pins (earning him his nickname). He's also a bit low on steals, but he's working on that.

Does he grab rebounds (ala "Round Mound of Rebound" Charles Barkley?). He's pretty hefty for that size, but I can see him being able to hold his own in the post, play good post D. That's a funny note about the "slashing" and knocking people over like bowling pins, hehe. I imagine the coach would not be happy if he did that a lot in games. ^^
Hey, Moonshiners need to stop hogging all the pretty girls already! >:[
But yeah, I could see her fitting in well there (and increasing ticket sales). I also thought of what it would be like for her to be drafted by the Minutemen... and I have very mixed feelings about that. (other than she'd look good in the jersey and that team could use a star in the making)
