Another cover, another creative censorship job. I took some my primary inspiration for the cover of the Star Frontiers Game Expanded Rules cover. I knew that I wanted to have a crash landing, but I had to pick the right characters and pose. Eventually I decided that Charge would have to be on the cover because he's thinly veiled Rocket Raccoon. I don't know where the image of Hors stuck in an inflated suit came from, but once it was there I couldn't get it out of my head. Lastly I picked Ash because she's feminine, a researcher, and she'd be perfect for space exploration.
Initial idea I was working off of was that the three heroes had crash landed in a small cruiser, barely escaping the burning wreckage, but they had just stepped out of the frying pan and into the fire. The cover is almost from the monster's point of view. Hors is terrified. He's got a big appetite, but he can't move because of his suit's confounded emergency inflation function. Charge is nervous, but cocky. He's not going to let some big tentacle monster intimidate him, and he's sure as heck not gonna look like a coward in front of his team. Ash is fuckin' into it. and she's tenderly holding a tentacle with the beast to show that she's absolutely DTF, as long as she gets to take notes.
Reimagining the heroes for Scifi was fun. I was originally intending for them each to have their own color palettes to show that they were a mercenary band and not part of a unified team, but things worked out better with them wearing similar colors.
I replaced Hors' snack packs with medpacks. They probably still contain snacks. In hindsight, I wish I'd used the medpack design I came up with for some of the characters later in the book, but oh well. His suit normally fits him a lot better, but he was thrown from the ship on impact and basically bounced to where he is like a beach ball.
Charge's design isn't especially complex, but it does make him look like the most capable fighter. He has a scifi version of his Bangers. They stick to his upper arm and hip with magnets or something for easy access. He also has an enormous codpiece with the word BOSS on it because he's the best, and everyone should know it. Kah wondered if I could put a hammer on it, and it gave birth to Hammerpants, though in this case it'd be more of a suit upgrade. He can quickly remove it when he needs access to his big guns.
Ash's outfit is deliberately sexualized. The middle of her suit is either transparent, or completely absent, leaving her double cleavage visible, and her tits are capped with some kind of shield generators that look like nipples. The suit's hips are flared out, making her look more curvy, and she has massive wedge heels build straight into her boots. I wanted her to be the only one smiling on the cover, and I ended up giving her the anime glare on her goggles to emphasize the perverted thoughts going on in her head. Her suit being such a light color helps to balance out Hors' sheer size on the opposite side.
I put a lot of work into the rim lighting from the fire glow behind them, and the texture on the tentacles was a pain in the ass, but turned out great. The only thing I'm not especially happy with is the actual ground. It's a little lackluster, but it's not supposed to stand out, so it's fine.
I'm incredibly happy to say that everyone I've shown this cover to loves Hors. The poor goober.
