Because tanuki know how to party!
I recently re-re-re-re-rewatched Pom Poko the other day, which of course made me think of
JohnnyTanuki, and I miss him, so in keeping with my habit of drawing the ones I miss, this is the result.
Since I didn't put Johnny's traditional pizza-slice outfit on him, I compromised by putting a pizza slice on his tie (which, come to think of it, any self-respecting tanuki would wear).
Done spur-of-the-moment & over several late-night sessions in-between library visits, so I couldn't ask Johnny for particulars on his fursona. All errors here are the result of impatience & hubris. But it was fun putting on that big black wig!

It was in the contract for Pom Poko that they couldn't mess with certain things, such as the fact that tanuki are raccoons that beat people up with their testicles. Disney couldn't alter that, though they did get away with calling them "raccoon pounces."
Having seen the movie both subbed and dubbed there is remarkably little alterations in the script (and the animation is untouched).

Well, that's kinda what I meant. The did foul up in small ways, but its amazingly unchanged, based on the nature of the content.
As for calling them raccoons: no one in the US understands what a "tanuki" is. They look like what people recognize as raccoons, therefore, call them raccoons.

Bah--the entire show demonstrates what a tanuki is. They didn't substitute names of locations or the names of the characters, and I doubt the average viewer (outside of Japan) would find those familiar, either. With that mindframe, we might as well call koalas, bears---ooops! ^__^
Names are just names, most people can deal with that. "Oh, your name is Hialofquaehia? Alright." Same with cities. Even if I don't know where a city is, I understand the concept of a city.
But show me an animal that I do know the name of (or assume that I do) and call it something else (even if its right) I might get confused. Remember, the target audience is a 10 year old American kid (who would be hard pressed to find "America" on an unlabled map).
In either case, I wish they'd called them tanuki too.
