My headcannon. TLK takes place in the same world as the Planet of the Apes (the new movies) far into the future. the same virus that brought intelligence to Caesar and his apes and killed off mankind spread to all of animal kind, giving them all intelligence. It didn't sop them from eating each other. Eventually, they found a balance in the Circle of Life. Occasionally, odd relics may pop up.
