A strange hybridization of animal and fungus, the Erosporium Psuedodraco, better known amongst explorers as the Mycolisk, has become a surprisingly common sight across many of the untamed outer wilds of the known universe. They’ve entered into a unique form of symbiosis with many interstellar travelers, as they subsist not on consuming the flesh of other creatures, but instead the psychic residue produced during strong emotional reactions. It is presumed that before the Fappening, this would attract them to the sites of large-scale battles and festivals, but now the frequent orgies that occur post-Fappening prove an equally-tantalizing buffet for them to feast upon.
The voyeuristic creatures tend not to be physically aggressive, though they are known to ‘encourage’ larger meals by using their massive wings to spread hypnotic spores that lower inhibitions and make emotional outbursts more likely.
In the modern era, many crews have taken a liking to the critters and taken them aboard for their own enjoyment or to sell at distant markets. That said, the very same wavelengths the Mycolisks consume can instead be used to fuel Hedonite reactors, so they’re often strictly forbidden aboard vessels that use such technology, since they reduce the efficiency of their operation. Some scholars worry that Mycolisks may present a threat as an invasive species on many worlds in the future, as the spores they spread can cling to interplanetary explorers and eventually sprout into new Mycolisks when their hosts touch down on foreign soil.
The Mycolisk is one of my favorite designs from Hyper Space. The commissioner was worried that the design wouldn't be 'sexual enough' for the fapp books, but I think the fact that it isn't an overwhelimgly sexualized fuckbeast is what gives it so much visual appeal.
The creature's visual design borrows from a lot of different sources. The wings are designed after Angel Wing Mushrooms. It felt fitting, given their name, and it turned out pretty well. The horns are based off of coral fungus, and they give it a really interesting alien look. I don't remember what kind of mushrooms I used for inspiration for the ears or tail tip, but I think the scales along the back are also angel wing mushrooms? They kinda look like it, anyway.
Originally I was going to have the creature be eyeless, to make it look more mysterious and threatening, but the patron wanted eyes, and it turned out really cute. I'm really happy with the nostril arrangement. I always try to give alien creatures unusual nostrils so they don't just look like earth creatures.
The initial prompt idea had them hypnotizing people into wet dream comas to feed off of, but I like the softer angle that Kah ended up going with at the end. Despite my usual proclivities, I do enjoy mutually beneficial situations.
