Even creepier? It being a process to apply to adults to make their body start to 'grow' into whatever shape they want. Think of all those (horrible) plastic surgery pictures in Hollywood circles. Now imagine that people do like the "Cat Woman" but with cancer instead of just freakishly collapsed faces as a price for their vanity. Some would use it for more than just making their hair thicker/belly thinner/muscles more defined or something like that.
I had a scary thought: Making their kids look like a cat just so they can be unique actors. Ewwwwwww, like you said. In the real world, you probably wouldn't have awesome super powers in otherwise normal people but rather physical abnormalities in the disguise of 'unique features'. Think of how dogs have health issues from the extreme inbreeding that is used while trying to select features such as a smaller/bigger dog or hair colors. Yeah, depressing for people's GE (genetic-engineering) SciFi fantasies, but something that future would-be Dr. Moreau's obviously will be aware of.
In related news from the plant world, people have realized that breeding plants can give the same advantages as GM foods but without all the legal and ethical hassle of patented life and farmers/countries/communities blacklisting. It's not as 'cool' as the 'perfectly-engineered' tomato but the breed plants have shown many features that rival crops grown from the best GM seeds. Note: Sarcasm about 'cool'
There's a reason that they're not required to label GM foods. The know they wouldn't sell as well so they manipulated the FDA and USDA and FTC to not require it. Remember the room-temperature beef that came in pouches meant for camping or portable lunch or something? No salt, no cooking, no pickling. They used radiation to sterilize the food. Irony: It was probably even safer than fresh meat cooked on a stove. Acrylamides and such... The radiation was long gone by the time it got to the store since it was plain X-rays which don't create dangerous reactions like neutrons do.

even tho, i always find useless to discuss how hybrids would work on real life, since its rather impossible, at least how i depict them. just think about -what would it take to have ears on top of your head-, it's ridiculous! you would need holes in your skull and extra space for your inner ear where the brain is, and a different balance system! JUST FOR THE EARS!!! D:

Who needs nukes when you've got rods from God or a golden eye? AFAIK there is no anti-asteroid missile as well. You can't even stop them from hitting your capital buildings. Anyone up for a Damocles sword fight? :P That and frigging sharks with lasers should be adequate for any video game villain in the Metal Gear genre.
Note that these weapons are probably feasible but also probably as suicidal as hell. In the sense that trying to set them up would trigger a preemptive strike.
