There was a separate fleet element composed of transports, and Meredith frowned at the ship leading them.
It was an orbital bombardment monitor named Mars Ultor. It was equipped with nuclear missiles and two mass driver cannon. The mare took a breath and let it out slowly, guessing that wherever this fleet was going, at least part of its mission involved landing troops.
She spared a thought for whoever would be on the receiving end of those mass drivers. Enemy or not, Confed or not, they were Terrans just like she was.

That bit from Supporting Role got me thinking about what the Mars Ultor (or Mars the Avenger) would look like, so I mapped it out on graph paper this morning.
Yes, I suck as an artist, even with graph paper.
Here's some of the stats:
Length: 350m
Beam: 75m
Height: 50m
Mass: 450K metric tons
Crew: 10 officers, 150 enlisted
Weapons (offensive):
2 mass drivers
40-80 nuclear missiles, in 2 rotary launchers
Weapons (defensive):
10 point-defense secondary projectors
Defensive shields, Type VII
Engines:
4 Yoyodyne Mark XX hyperdive motors, two K7T reactors
This beast is designed for one thing, and one thing only - to pound the ever-loving shit out of a planetary target. The mass drivers (essentially two giant railguns) can fire metal rods up to 50 tons. The missiles are a mix of megatonnage, with some equipped with hardened alloy noses for burrowing into the planet's crust. If confronted by any enemy ship larger than a light cruiser, it has the option of jettisoning the weapons pod and running like a scalded cat.

Okay Walt. Now I understand what you were referring to during the discussion in the chat we enjoyed few days ago. So this is a "Monitor" right? Is it patrolling low orbits and interdicting any spacecraft leaving or approaching the planet? How about it's role as a bomber? I take it the ventral side of this vessel would be festooned with ports for launching orbit to surface bombs or missiles? Reading your descriptions, I understand the long projections at the front of the vessel are the railguns, and I'm guessing that the little "Diamond" shaped projections at the top and bottom of the thinned down point just before the engines are the defensive turrets?
Yes. So many questions, but your sketches proved intriguing, and kicked my old "Engineering Illustration" brain into gear. (Graph paper does that to me, you know?)

It's not designed for interdiction, as all of its weapons (apart from the missile launchers and railguns) are defensive. It's a bomber, pure and simple, designed to rain destruction down on planetary targets.
It doesn't have ports on its ventral or dorsal surface; it basically "stands on its head" pointing down at the planet (this gives it a minimal silhouette) and fires missiles and/or projectiles (two missile ports inboard of the railguns).
The two towers at the waist are fire control directors, with turrets located at strategic points on the hull.

For me, drawing *anything* is a frustrating exercise. Major disconnect between my imagination and my hands.
While I had a HS drafting class (back in '73-74), my 'drawing skills be poor as well.
So cheat. The base DAZ program is free, and you can make 3D 'primitive' objects to stick together/color.

(Just a suggestion - and note me if you have questions! )
