I don't think I've put one up of Jade yet, sooooo... Heeeeere's Jade!
Jade is a wonderful little lady tiger, of the Siberian persuasion, and is Java's sister. She's got a really great attitude and a wonderful personality, and is warmly social besides. She loves to be taken out for walks, but she's a whole lot more self-confident than her giant brother, so she just has a great time, rather than being a bit of a panic-case the whole walk.
Jade will turn 7-y-o this next June, and is just the most wonderful tiger you could ever meet. She's about 450 lbs, which is about average for Siberian females. She's always warm and bubbly, and has a friendly chuff or two (or three or five) for everyone she knows. She likes nothing better than to lay down next to the cage fence so you can reach through the wire and scratch her shoulder. She'll stay there forever, as she's the world's largest attention sponge!
In this pic, this is one of her more lazy moments. She's laying on her platform and rather than actually move, she's just rolling over onto her back so she can get close enough to the wire so I can scratch. She's chuffing away too! Jade with almost always answer if you "chuff" to her, which is always fun.
In this pic, she's almost entirely upsidedown, with her face entirely expressive with whiskers forward and everything.
Jade too, just like her brother Java, have the neatest eyes; they're a light amber around the outside or the cornea, and then turn to a beautiful, sky-blue around the pupil. As you can see here, tigers (like most of the big cats) have round pupils. I've also always loved Jade's nose. It's that wonderful pink color, but with all those stark black "freckles". I think it's the prefect nose for her personality, and is just one other thing that makes her so special!
So this is Jade!
This picture was taken 22-Jul-03. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and the EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens. The original was taken at full frame of 3072x2048x24b, ISO eqv 400, 1/125 shutter, f/3.5. This image was shrunken down for space conservation.

That face just melts the heart! I'm afraid it would be terribly corney to say I am in love with all your kitties..but I'm afraid I am just that, very much smitten!
On a sidenote, I am sorry I've been so slow to reply to your last e-mail, but I haven't forgotten about it :).

Wel, this is good then! One more pic for the Conspiracy!
No problem at all about a reply. Spirits know, things get busy sometimes. After last week (the move, work, etc) I found the weekend was a welcomes change, and I just needed to be a totally lazy beast all weekend. :)
I'm glad you like Jade. She's a wonderfully elegant lady!

You forgot to put "little" in quotation marks. ;)
Very beautiful photo, as usual, and very interesting fact about their eyes! You've made me realize there are more than just a few common misconceptions out there with your frequent commentary as well, thanks for sharing! :)

You're very welcome on all counts.
On of my passionate missions is to share with everyone who'll listen, everything I can about these magnificent animals. Photos and babble seem to be a great way to stimulate curiosity, and get some dialog going. As always, doalog's a good thing! :)
I guess I said little from the perspective that the females of cars are always smaller than the males, sometimes significantly (20-50%, depending on the species). So having worked mostly with male tigers, Jade's "little". :) But you're right; it would probably be more appropriate to have it in quotes.
I'm glad you like the pix and comments.

I don't know if tigers are the "most", as the lynxes and bobcat can be extremely social and seem to love everyone, and most cougars are pretty good as well.
I thinks it's that tigers have the "big cat" attitude, and aren't nearly as startled by fast movements or that sort of thing, so they tend to be a lot more tolerant of everybody. They have their "favorite" people, probably their handlers and care givers that pay attention to them on a daily basis, but tigers, more so than most big cats, are really accepting of everyone.
Certainly, tigers are special in that respect. There are not many things that can warm your heart quite like walking up to a tiger, and having it give you a friendly chuff in greeting, like you're just a fellow tiger. :)

Tigers definitely have an awesome magnificence to them, but as I've worked with the different species of cats over the years, I'f found that they all have a similar dignity and poise. They're all pretty impressive, without exception, even down to the little guys like the sand cats and margays.
I need to dig through my sound clips and see if I can find a tiger chuff to post here on FA. I know I have a few...somewhere. :)

but how did you get to do hands-on work!? I'm not a keeper at the zoo, only a volunteer, and even if I was, the zoo operates a totally paw's-off approach to looking after the tigers, even the keepers keep a metal door in the way at all times. Dammit, I'm so jealous now! *animeflails and demands to be given a kitty to cuddlesnuggle with!* X3
Well, in truth, I've done just about everything from field work to academics with animals over the past now 26 years, so in that time, you manage to do a thing or two here and there. I've done more than a few stints at smaller, private facilities, from maintenance to engineering to curating, so in truth, I've done it all. Now, after so many years of playing politics, etc, etc, I'm very happy to just be with my two sons, Drifter (cougar) and Macumba (leopard). I still get to work very closely with them, and they're both leash-trained, so we even go for walks occasionally. That's always fun, and a good opportunity for pix! Drifter and Macumba are both large parts of my picture library here, so feel free to have a look.
I would like to encourage you to keep volunteering. There is a /huge/ need for it, and there are many small facilities out there that might give you opportunity to work a little closer with the animals. Most of the time, it's pretty simple to find where facilities are in your area. If you go to the USDA website, and then look under APHIS, there is a search engine for for all licensees nationwide. That might help you to narrow down a search, should you want to look into that avenue of volunteering as well.
In any case, I wish you the very best of luck with all your endeavors. These animals can truly change your life. They are indeed very magnificent creatures! my life has been blessed beyond compare to have known so many of them. :)
Most Sincerely,
Shasta
