The seabirds cried, diving for scraps of spilled faire and refuse, squabbling over food scraps before buzzing off in the sea breeze. The wooden expanse was emptying for the day. The tents closing their flaps, groups of people sitting at tables in small numbers, and the salt of the sea in the air. Achilles dug for what remained of the cheesy popcorn he'd shared with Elisa, watching as she rolled the heavy ball up the ramp. "C'mon! Why do I always miss?!" She exclaimed over the thudding of the ball. She wanted to play some skee ball, but was spinning it a little too hard on her rolls. She had two left to roll, gritting her teeth as she held one with a grip of iron. "W-w-wait. Can I?" Achilles asked, setting the box of snacks down as he reached his hand out for the ball. Elisa sighed and pouted, relinquishing the ball as Achilles stepped forward and lined up his roll. His roll went wider than Elisa's throw, prompting Achilles to rub the back of his hair. "Well, guess we're not getting enough tickets for that stuffed animal you wanted." He said, shrugging as Elisa retrieved the last ball. She inhaled, exhaled, then with great effort she rolled for the center, but to her annoyance it went right, missing the corner slot and rolling for the lowest score slot. Achilles was fully prepared to witness her visibly fume, holding the popcorn and snagging a few pieces before he was robbed by the vixen. "I think you owe me for throwing off my groove." She said, stuffing her face and giving him a smug look. "Hmm, I think I know a pizza place down near the road. How about it?" Achilles asked, grabbing what remained of the box of popcorn. "Hmm, throw in some churros and I think I'll let that whole thing with the water guns slide too." She replied, winking at him, before she stretched her arms a bit from the last carnival game for the day.
They walked down the wooden pier, making small talk, looking at the beach, bonfires lit as groups enjoyed their evenings. Achilles thought to himself how it'd only been a few months since he barely knew Elisa. But here they were, talking it up like old friends, not a care in the world. Elisa yawned, having been up all day, still tired from both jobs the day prior, but keeping pace down to the road. Achilles put his hand on her shoulder, prompting her to stop. "Hmm? Yeah, what's up, Cal?" She asked, the look of fatigue settling in the green eyes. "You look kinda tired, Lis. How about I make it up to you another time, maybe get you home, yeah?" He asked, seeing her think on it before nodding in agreement. She was definitely tuckered out, putting all her effort into staying awake. "Well, I think I know a way you can pay me back now. It's still a ways to the car, and you're right, I'm beat. So, maybe give a girl a lift?" She suggested, Achilles obliging by letting her hop onto his back, Elisa being lighter than he expected. And as she held on tight he carried her to the car, letting her sleep while he drove her home in the approaching night. He saw her inside before heading home for the night, thinking to the weight of her on him, the feeling of someone else on his shoulders.
