Well, to be honest (as Hebrew native speaker), and hope I don't spoil this for you (apologies if so!) Shamir means (usually) dill (the spice/plant). It rarely means emery . It can (biblically) also means a material that is somewhat like a sandpaper. So I'm not sure how he got the idea of it meaning protector, but oh well. Ilan definitely means tree. It's still a nice name (I was surprised that this isn't an Israeli guy at all haha), and of course - great pic.
Oh well that's disappointing: I mean - I did search for fitting quotes and found this one - and did a quick google search for the author - and like you, I saw the little bit of trivia on the right side - and smiled about that for a moment. But "dill tree" is also kinda neat.
Fun fact: My sister speaks Hebrew (or at least she did >20 years ago - I'm not sure she still can...) - I was always terrible with languages on the other hand

Sorry, didn't want to make you feel bad. The quote itself is undoubtedly beautiful. Oh! Bring her over for chat ! haha. Dill tree is totally good (and tasty!) . I love languages. Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch! (And Yiddish haha).
