Miette had been completely opposed to the idea of decorating a tree, Noel or not, but Auroreโs other aunties came to a consensus.
So, instead of uprooting some poor tree they chose one abutting the secret forest castle closely enough that the little girl who lived
there could admire it. She was their niece, not yet old enough to learn too much of the world, but certainly old enough for gifts and
merriment. And so, without chopping down the tree at all, they decorated it with glittering ornaments, one from each aunt. The tree
came alive with little crystal fish, songbirds, and flowers.
Aurore watched the beautiful display of magical lights from the window of her lonely bedroom. She knew that when her aunties left,
she would be alone again, and the thought eclipsed the beauty of the tree. One by one, as they said goodbye, she began to sniffle.
Violente, the boldest of the faerie aunts, stopped at the doorway and turned slowly around. Her amber-glazed eyes slowly looked
down at the princess and her heart rose with pity.
โTake courage, your highness,โ Violente said, lowering herself to one knee and offering a smile. โThereโs something I forgot. My gift
to you. Here he is.โ
From behind her back, the aunt, dressed in the coat and epaulettes of a military commander and with a rapier at her side, produced
a wooden nutcracker no larger than a doll, and set it into Auroreโs arms when she eagerly reached out for him. He was also wearing
a military coat with golden buttons, wore a sword at his side, and sported shiny black boots. On his head he wore a helmet that
allowed his handsome antlers to stand proudly above his cervine ears. His face, thought little Aurore, was quite handsome.
โWhat is he?โ she asked, turning him over in her arms and spying the lever on his back.
โHe is a nutcracker. A wonderful tradition this time of year. More than his normal utility, he is of great importance each night of the
season. Do you know why?โ
Aurore thought and thought, but she shook her head in the end. โNo, why?โ
Violente smiled and her eyes squinted this time.
โBecause, each night, the nutcracker protects the household. He keeps watch and guards little princesses like you when they have to
be alone for the night. He guards over their dreams. So, if you miss us, remember that he is here and hold him close.โ
Aurore bobbed her head with excitement and clutched the doll to her chest.
โI will, Auntie, I promise.โ
Violente reached out and tousled Auroreโs hair affectionately. โVery well then. Heโs under my command, so heโs well trained. Keep
her safe, soldier.โ
With that, the last of Auroreโs aunties departed for the night. Aurore watched the phosphorescent tree glowing in the distance for a
while before falling asleep with the handsome nutcracker cradled in her arms.
