You know what it reminds me of an old Asterix pixel game from my childhood https://i.imgur.com/6QqFpUj.png
The first one was a part of my childhood, albeit I sucked at it and my father found a trainer (cheats). Personally I think it's the best entry, even if the combat system is lackluster compared to XXL2 and Olympic Games (same developers).
The second game... I only experienced it in my pre-teens, I completed most of it but it didn't leave nearly the same impression. I hated the backtracking (still do), and most of the "popular videogame" refererences flew over my head because I simply didn't know them.
The third XXL entry honestly shouldn't have been labeled as XXL because it plays out and feels completely different. It has cute cartoony graphics but that's about one of the few good things about it. This game forces actual XXL fans to throw their habits out of the window, such as jumping to avoid damage - there's NO jumping, only a stupid dash which doesn't even always work properly. Side quests and rare collectibles are useless. The MCs can get annoying by complaining about falling into water or pointing out there's a boar nearby. Cutscenes are boring to watch due to top-down camera and little character animation. I got to share the suffering with an ex-friend (don't ask...) by playing it in co-op via Parsec.
There are also, uh, remasters of the first 2 games, the XXL2 one is so-so and the XXL1 is a great disaster...
Also I learned from a friend there's a Discord server dedicated to the Asterix games developed by Etranges Libellules (XXL1+2 and Olympic Games) and somewhat to others, people don't seem too familiar with games older than Gallic War from 1999 (?).
