Remember, as a colour becomes lighter, it becomes less saturated, not more - the darkest parts of the image must be the most saturated. As well as travelling around the colour wheel (Yellow in shadow is more of a red colour, darker green tends towards blue and lighter towards yellow - pink becomes purple), you must always be checking the saturation of a colour. So no more green (0,240,0) to dark green - I want to see desaturated yellow-green to saturated green-blue. Once you grasp this about painting with light rather than colour, things will come a lot easier to you.
