I've been meaning to do this for quite some time now, but Kye has been needing an update for years now. And I'm not exaggerating, the last update he had was drawn in 2016.
In this time period where I'm finally drawing new characters I have yet to introduce and kinda reworking my entire roster, I cannot at all deny the presence of the one who started it all. I still have other characters new and old to draw and update, but seeing as Kye has ten years of significance behind him, I think it was obvious he needed to go first of the bunch that's coming next.
For those of you new here - first of all, hello and welcome - and considering this guy has received many updates over the years in appearance, personality, and the world around him, I think it's important to refresh the audience on who this guy is. Usually, I like to merely list the differences of my characters as they appear in their new art, but considering that Kye has not been around in a few years, I've decided to change things this time around and label the version after how many iterations there have been, this one being the seventh.
His Majesty the First, Kye O'Doyle, is the one of the current rulers of Aunov, the Kingdom of Light, on the planetoid Ioa. He currently serves alongside his older brother Sacred • SDragon01 • and his best friend Wing. Together with their families, they live just across from the capital in a 30-story-tall tower. He is a bright green Yoshi, which colors his entire body; he doesn't have the same white secondary skin color across his cheeks or down his chest like a normal Yoshi does. His birthday is April 23, 1995, making him 25 years old (as of this upload).
Kye was born in Aunov by his parents, Minnie and Orville O'Doyle, where he was raised for a couple of years until a Yoshi with a plan for world domination begun to heavily harrass the family for Kye, they moved to Yoshi's Island on the Mushroom Planet to convince the fiend that they had disappeared. Kye would spend most of his childhood there, and growing up is where he discovered that he had gained the power of super speed. It was here that he would meet his childhood best friend, Spot. But much to his surprise, he had moved again heading into his teenage years to the human world, where he would attend new schools and meet new people, including his friend Jake, as well as had a much larger world to explore thanks to his speed.
During a run out into a forest, Kye ran into a bit of trouble that resulted in his attire being ripped apart and injuring him some; thankfully, a red Yoshi nearby just so happened to be camping and brought him over to rest and be taken care of. He introduced himself as Sacred, and the two have been inseparable ever since, going on multiple adventures, including one that resulted in their bodies being altered to have malleable properties, and another that gave Kye a similar dragonblood marking on his cheeks, resulting in these two friends now becoming blood brothers. Here is what was written from Version 6:
These marks are usually seen on Sacred Dragon • SDragon01 • and members of his family or bloodline. These marks appeared on Kye's cheeks after a hostage situation involving him and Sacred, leading to experimentation. The nefarious Dr. Y (yet to be shown), and his assistant Comag, captured the two, stripped them of their powers, performing numerous tests and taking samples of their DNA and blood, as well as torturing them as they see fit. Such actions caused a reaction within Kye's body, as previous endeavors with Sacred led to dragon blood being found within his own bloodstream, and making two orange marks, curved like the claw of a dragon, appear on Kye's face. In the time following the kidnapping, it is unknown how and if the markings will disappear from Kye's face. It has also been discovered that these markings include a special power within them, allowing Kye to tap into the power of dragons, either granting him strength, or the form of one, although assuming a dragon form has been known to include control problems.
Years later, as Kye had grown into adulthood, he was taken by his mother to visit Aunov again, this time revealing to him that this was his home, rather than Yoshi's Island or the human world like he was assuming. Despite hearing such a bombshell, he wanted to return here and live where he was born. However, this brought him face-to-face with the fiend who was after him when he was a baby: Dr. Y, a dark-gray Yoshi who had been studying Ioa for years, and was looking for Kye to be the medium that would reawaken Ioa's fabled power source, the Aurora Lights.
Surprisingly, Dr. Y was successful, using his technology to take control of Kye, and using his research, led him to a cave near the coast, where they found a large sphere, that looked to be made of glass. It glowed with multiple colors at its core, but under mind control, he blankly put his handpaw on it... A voice spoke to him, it coarsed his body with light and warmth, transforming him into a golden super state, releasing him from his mind control and ultimately defeating Dr. Y, but realizing what power it gave him, he took them back home to protect them from theft.
Months later, Kye and his friends made the effort to move to Aunov, not only to have a better chance at protecting the Aurora Lights, but to learn of the kingdom he knew so little about. It was here that he met the former King and Queen, Alexander and Alexandria, who revealed to Kye that they were his grandparents. Knowing that he was royalty, he was crowned Prince of Aunov. Thanks to multiple adventures and heroic deeds to the kingdom and its people, along with all of their friends, Sacred and Wing were also crowned princes. Their Highnesses, the Second and Third, respectively.
Dr. Y would eventually return with a new plan and new technology, with the idea of taking control of the country's Pokémon to create an army and take over. This also included goating Kye and his friends to his location, forcibly transforming Kye and Sacred into their Pokémon forms, later Goldie and his brother Alex, and taking them into captivity, along with their Pokémon friends. The most capable members of the Royal Family, now taken away to be servants to an evil genius...
Or so they would think, as Kye and his friends and family would eventually and surprisingly be saved by the likes of his own parents, who revealed to him and the others that they both used to be adventurers themselves, which is also how they met and got married. Kye discovered from them that his mother, Minnie, is a sorceress, and this power has been inherited through the O'Doyle family since the Mushroom Kingdom medieval times, explaining why Kye has super speed, and why he has some control over dragon strength, inherited by a previous adventure with Sacred and thanks to his father, Orville, being part dragon as well. Because of this small inherited power, Dr. Y wanted to capture Kye, mainly at a young age where he couldn't defend himself to be used as the medium to activate the Aurora Lights again and take them for himself, but Minnie and Orville saw through his plan and fled to Yoshi's Island without saying a word to protect him. Both of them assumed normal lives, put away any semblence of exploration gear, and hid it all from Kye to prevent him from prematurely going back to Aunov until they thought he was ready to do so.
At the same time, Minnie and Orville shared with Kye that this was not their first run-in with Dr. Y, they had known him since before Kye was born, thanks to him trying to attempt the same thing with Minnie, thanks to her magic and bloodline ties. Funny enough, every run-in was a loss for the doctor; no matter what he did, he could never beat either of them, separately or together. So now, with both of them back in the scene, they joined Kye and his friends to save the day and defeat Dr. Y once more.
With the family back together and on proper terms with each other, this gained the attention of Kye's grandparents, wishing to retire from the throne and grant it to a new generation, the likes of Kye, Wing, and Sacred. This made them the ruling Kings of Aunov, boosting Orville and Minnie to be known as High King and High Queen, and Alexander and Alexandria as Elder King and Elder Queen.
Kye continues to serve as King to his homeland, swearing to protect it by any means necessary. And with the help of his friends and family, there's nothing he can't accomplish!
Take one good look at that grin and you will likely get your answer.
Kye is energetic and brash, kind and helpful, but also impatient and playful. In other words, he is always willing to help someone in need, willing to put his life on the line if it means saving his friends or his people, but he's also quick to take action, which sometimes can work against him as he sometimes doesn't take the time to plan out his moves. He is full of energy and believes in himself and others, always willing to share his confidence with others. He's also the kind of guy who will crack a joke about you, poke fun at you, and generally annoy you if you're close enough; otherwise, his time as King has taught him quite a bit about being respectful to those around you, and isn't likely to use his usual flavor text unless he knows you better.
When Kye was first introduced in 2010, he took alot of inspriation from Sonic the Hedgehog. A lot. But over time, those similarities have kind of mellowed out. Speaking of which...
His Majesty, the First is an Ioan Yoshi: solid green in color from head to toe, with no white cheeks, chest, tummy or tail to be seen. This is actually a common trait among species on Ioa, in which their appearance is slightly altered from that of the "Pure" of their species, or what many on Ioa consider to be the prime version of themselves; as such, a colored Yoshi with white on them, saddle/shell, and standard boots is known as a Pure Yoshi to Ioans. Kye also has an orange crest-shaped mark on his left and right cheeks, and the scales on the back of his head are red-orange. His eyes are a deeper shade of sky blue.
Despite his appearance, Kye is a Yoshi through-and-through, so he has naturally good running speed, a stretchy and sticky tongue, he can lay eggs with the things he eats and use them as weaponry, quickly move this legs in midair to hover for a moment, and use magical bubbles to transform into different forms.
However, that last point is greatly exaggerated as Kye is known as a Softie on Ioa, or a being that has a body with malleable properties. Softies do not have bones in their bodies or internal organs, but the body as a whole substitutes these actions for its changed makeup. Softies have bodies that mimic malleable materials, like dough or clay, and creates a scent that somehow matches their personality.
For example, when Kye takes a hit, it will likely slow him down, he might recoil from it, but the worst that will happen is getting a dent on his body that will puff back to shape in a little while; there's no pain from it, but just the feeling that comes from it. Or, if Kye is crushed by something heavy like a Thwomp, he is merely crushed and flattened down into himself! No pain, no life lost, but this does present new dangers that Softies deal with, such as the likelihood of becoming stuck or trapped in a form or somewhere. In this case, yes, Kye is not hurt and is merely squashed, but without someone to help him spring back to shape, he is perpetually trapped and leaves him open to be squashed again, or for someone to take him with little resistance. This also means that Softies can be very stretchy and flexible, which gives Kye ease at moving around and maneuvering. Thankfully, publically available in Aunov is Reform Potion: with one drop on a Softie's body, it reads the DNA to determine what the natural and normal state of the body is, and revert it to that. Kye never travels without it.
Finally, thanks to being the son of a sorceress and a half-dragon, as well as adventuring with another half-dragon, he does have an inkling of inherited power from his mother, which gives him super speed and enhanced strength, granted by his father. Thanks to Sacred, a former adventure with him resulted in Kye receiving a marking on his cheeks similar to that of his brother, allowing him to channel more of his inheritance as part-dragon to increase his strength and stamina, and can grant him dragon wings, but at the risk of losing his own control. Kye is able to use magic, but he's very limited in what he can do since he hasn't expanded on his own yet. This does mean that he can be one of the users of the Aurora Lights, Ioa's power source, to transform into Halo Kye, a form of ultimate power that grants him blistering speed, super strength, flight, near invincibility, and heightened senses.
Because Kye is constantly on the move, he tends to favor traveling as lightly as possible. This means, from his previous iteration, he has significantly slimmed down his carry-on to something more akin to his first appearance. He no longer regularly wears a crown and instead opts to wear it during formal events where the attire is more appropriate. As a substitution, he wears the Gold Emblem of the Aunova Royal Family, which takes the appearance of a Power Star with an angel's wing on the left and right, and is pinned to his new neckerchief on the right side. It's also double-layered and large in size, the front is dominantly red, while the layer underneath is yellow to green to blue, and it partially hangs below the top layer off to the side. These colors are in reference to some of Kye's previous articles, such as his aforementioned crown, his necklace and armbrace from Version 5, and his sword and shield from Version 6.
Speaking of sword and shield, the Royal Pride and Royal Guardian make a return as the Pride & Protector set. The Royal Pride 6 once again is made from diamond with a hollow center and rounded tip. It is attached to a redesigned hilt, meant to be closer to a traditional sword, and to reduce weight. The handle itself is made with a rubber material that is designed to improve grip, and underneath it is a returning feature from the Royal Pride 5, the use of magical pendants that can change the form of the blade. The following is quoted from Version 6, with any adjustments for this update italicized:
A new feature to the Royal Pride is the loop seen at the bottom of the handle. In development are magical pendants known as Emblems that change the blade in various ways. The standard attachment, shown in the image above, is the Angel Wing Emblem, which lightens the weight of the sword and allows it to be handled much more easily, considering the amount of diamond used on the blade and the silver used for the hilt.
Also returning and redesigned is the inclusion of an emergency sample of Kye's soft body and vial of Reform Potion, hidden within the central part of the hilt. The colorful center bearing the colors and patterns of the Aunova flag is actually a door that can be pushed inward and have pop out to reveal the contents inside.
The hollow center of the blade allows Kye to initiate a last resort spell that would seal him inside of the Royal Pride and protect it from physical and magical damage until those of close to Kye can set him free by wielding the sword. Again, I quoted this from Version 6, and italicized text is edits I made from that reference to match this one:
What can also be implemented is a spell or maneuver that would seal Kye inside the blade itself. Kye would turn into the blade but go into a magically-induced coma. This is to prevent anyone from capturing him completely, and the blade can also send an emergency signal to alert his friends and family and teammates that he is in trouble. During this phase, the blade uses whatever power Kye has to keep Kye sealed within the blade, and surrounds the sword in a protective layer, which will keep it from getting damaged, even from means that would normally destroy it. Only the power of those he loves can release him from the blade if this maneuver is activated.
The Royal Guardian 2 returns with the same silver and diamond construction as the first, now bearing the colors and patterns of the nation's flag and the Royal Family's emblem in the center. Its durability is unmatched by other physical shields and is capable of protecting against magical attacks or energy-based.
The Royal Pride 6 and Royal Guardian 2 are both carried in and on a custom silver-titanium sheathe, that uses friction fittings on the inside to prevent the blade from moving around while stored inside of it, and magnets on the outside that attach the shield to the outside, making it easy for Kye to pull both out during a battle.
Also crafted alongside the Royal Pride 5 and the Royal Guardian is a sheath made of a silver and titanium alloy with a brushed metal finish to hide any wear.
The inside of the sheath is smooth, to make sure it doesn't damage the sword when being put away. Padding on the inside helps guide the sword down the shaft, and to make sure the blade is doesn't grind against the sides and dulls the blade. At the bottom are rubber fittings that use friction to hold the sword in place inside the sheath and prevent it from moving around or falling out, seeing as Kye is likely to be moving very quickly and allows him to still be as flexible as possible. It leans to the right, as Kye is more likely to draw the sword using his right hand; speaking of which, the backside of the sheath also houses the shield, which is held to the back of the sheath using strong magnets, to keep both the sheath and the shield's designs seamless without any noticeable connections.
...with the sheath always on his back, a smooth and soft yet strong and durable thick fabric strap wraps around Kye's body and can be adjusted to be loose for a casual stroll with it on, or tightened to hug his body, perfect for running or during combat, to make sure he doesn't lose any of his tools.
Finally, Kye continues to wear a pair of air shoes that this time have been updated and designed by Mac for optimum performance. They are once again red and are woven by a breathable fabric meant to maximize airflow; this helps keep Kye's feet cool while running at his top speeds. Quoting from Version 6:
The shoes are able to hold a small amount of air within an embedded tank, allowing Kye to hover for a short time, whether on water or in the air. To refill the tank, Kye needs to be in motion. As he runs, air is fed through the material past his feet and into a collection valve. The shoes can be activated by clicking them together, and can be refilled while they're in use, so long as Kye doesn't stop moving, or continuously moves fast enough.
The newest addition to them are the inclusion of a status light at the bottom front of the shoe along the sole. This light displays one of four colors - red, yellow, green, blue - to denote how much air that tank is holding. Red indicates the tank is empty, while blue indicates that it's full. If red starts to strobe, it needs service.
Phew!! That was quite the writing job, but even after spending days on doing all of this, I felt like this wasn't my best job at all putting this together, sloppily recalling previous details and throwing in quotes from former references because I was feeling lazy (I also blame work for cutting my time during the day to work on more art or put proper focus into writing these descriptions). Still, in the process of updating my main characters, Kye had to be in there and I'm glad I finally got to do him. It's been ten years since he was first introduced to the world and he's gone through many changes. He still holds a special place in my heart and I'm happy to say that he's not going anywhere.
Thanks for looking and reading!
