And yes, I'm aware that this might come as a surprise, as I made a reference earlier this year for my Yoshi, but it seems synonomous now that everything prior to redoing Rae is being considered for one themselves. In other words, the more I looked at that reference, the more I began to dislike it. I have a massive problem with indecisiveness and even when I made it, I hadn't settled on what I wanted to do with my Yoshi.
But here we are, months following, just weeks left in 2020, and I can proudly say that I have my answer. To me, this was all about refinement, and figuring out how to go forward with it, even figuring out the layout to this page was a challenge. It really could've been simpler, but I wanted everything to be seen. I worked very hard on this and I wanted to show off all of this amazing work that I felt very proud of. When I made the original sketch back in October, I was pleased with the way it came out, mainly in the head. One of my pet peeves of art right now is still hair, but I managed to make it look closer to my actual hairstyle, instead of curls. I also enjoyed the expression, and the proportions are all where I want them to be: some chunk, but not over-doing it.
So now, I present Version 6 of... well, me! The original Doughshi! A title that ShadedBlue89 came up with and I ran with! "Kyle" mainly works, but so does "Doughshi" or - I consider this a kind of codename - "Cookie," a Softie Yoshi who's body mimics the texture, malleability and scent of cookie dough, which also runs with my personal love of cookies, and since most of the body colors are just like mine and match that of my favorite type of cookie, chocolate chip.
1️⃣ Refined Colors • While the primary body colors - skin, hair, eyes - remain the same, one subtle change I made was the rainbow that made up the head scales, to make it more subtle. Instead of making all three scales a transition of colors in the form of a rainbow, I reduced it to one, and the center scale. The top and bottom ones are a light brown.
🌈 Rainbow Scale • Even though there's less of a bodily presence of a rainbow behind Doughshi's head, this single scale on his head now serves a purpose. Playing into my interest in transformations and having drawn many new types of creatures this year, the Rainbow Scale, while unknown in acquisition, acts as a sort of storage device and has the power to "acquire" forms of other creatures who come into direct contact with the scale. It then "saves" the form and allows Doughshi to freely change into these forms and back again at will. Current forms that he has are Ioan Dragonite, Ioan Raichu, Ioan Eevee, Boo, and K'enehk. While in any of these forms, there is always a part of his body that is rainbow. For example, his Ioan Raichu form has it present on the tail. Since Cookie is capable of having parts of his body detached from him thanks to his malleable abilities, it is possible to remove the Rainbow Scale, or the rainbow part of his body while transformed, and this prevents him from using it until it's put back on.
2️⃣ Outfits • While I originally wanted to settle on one outfit, I can't deny that I had too many ideas in mind to stick with just one. So I made many! Many of these pieces are interchangeable with one another as well, with a couple exceptions.
👓 Eyewear • Doughshi has two types of eyewear that he can use: a standard pair of perfectly circular glasses held together by a red metallic nosepiece, and a pair of hi-tech glasses created by Mac, under the brand name LightTEC, a LightSIGHT visor that has headphones built in and can display information in the corner for the user to glance at. The LightSIGHT is mainly silver on the headpieces, but the circular frames' nosepiece can be various colors depending on the situation or holiday[b]. While red is the primary color that Doughshi would wear regularly, he might change it to green for the spring, or pink for Valentine's Day. He almost always wears these as they are prescribed; the only time he might not is when lounging.
🧣 [b]Neckwear & Middle Body • Returning to Doughshi's regular repertoir is his collar, made of a stretchy and soft fabric material that's breathable and elastic, so it's easy to put on and off, and a tag that not only stores an emergency droplet of Reform Potion, it also has a small speaker that is magically charmed to allow Doughshi to speak through it when he becomes incapacitated, usually when flattened or in a tight space. New to the closet is a colorful neckerchief inspired by Junior's, a open hooded jacket like Rainbow's, and also returning is a backpack. Unlike the collar, the neckerchief and jacket don't provide extra functionality that the collar does. Each of these pieces also have the Aunov Emblem of the Royal Family present on them at all times; this signifies the affiliation with the Royal Family and grants access in and out of the Tower (it's present on the jacket, but is covered up by the resting hood). However, of these four options, only one is worn at a time; no two of these accesories are worn together. Additionally, they don't have to put on at all, probably for times at home when Doughshi is resting, and like the bridge of his standard frames, each of these accessories can change color to match the present situation or occasion.
⌚️ Watch • A keen eye will tell you exactly what that is on his wrist, but it's also modified and designed by Mac, capable of providing more functions, mainly relative to the Rainbow Scale. Like a certain other smartwatch, the bands can be interchanged to different colors or materials, such as a polyurthane silicone perfect for outdoors on warm days, or a woven nylon when it's not worrisome to get dirty. The body is strengthened considerably to handle all of the squishings that Doughshi endures on a daily basis. The smartwatch includes additional apps designed by Mac to help visualize the forms acquired by the Rainbow Scale, as well as switching between them, but again, if the Rainbow Scale is removed from the body, these functions stop working.
🥾 Footwear • Once again returning is the standard pair of Yoshi boots, with a bit of adjustments to imitate sneakers thanks to an arch underneath. They use the same fabric as the collar so they're very breathable and stretchy for the perfect fit. Doughshi always wears socks with them. However, far less likely is the use of sandals that he has, which are primarily saved for hotter days.
🎀 Friend Bow • A present from Mrs. Raichu (LilArrin) for Cookie's birthday, the Team Guardians officer gifted him a Friend Bow, known by Exploration Teams as a held item with the power to influence friendships with other Pokémon in mystery dungeons. It seems to have the same effect outside of dungeons and on anyone nearby Doughshi, and it was her idea to place is right behind the tail, so without question, it's where it's placed whenever Cookie decides to wear it, which is infrequent. The design of the Friend Bow was also done on a whim as there's no specific or high-resolution art of it anywhere, so I ultimately made the shape of a bow and used the official colors instead.
🥚 • • While not an accessory, one of the traits of Doughshi is how Dot loves to go places with him. Being born on the road in Johto and usually not one to simply ride in his arms, Dot tends to enjoy being up higher and will commonly ride on Doughshi's head when he's able.
Ultimately, I'm way happier with how this came out, even if this reference is a huge clutter of outfit variations, but I felt that if I had just stuck with the bare body, it would appear a bit empty. I really wanted to show off everything, as I said, and in the end, this brings us the biggest piece I've ever made, both in canvas size and file size. This was the perfect thing to end 2020 on, and I'm willing to answer questions should they come up and perhaps later, I can try and simplify this some to make it potentially easier to understand, maybe put some of this information into the image itself.
I want to thank everyone for looking at all of my artwork throughout the last year, it's great to have gotten back into it and I hope to continue this trend through 2021 and beyond as I look to further my skills a little at a time. Thanks for looking and reading!
