The Current is the school newspaper for the community college I go to. After class today I happened to pick one up and find THIS in there!!! THANK GOODNESS for articles like these that actually view furries as something neutral/good! The furry interviewed in the text is griffbeeks and I thank him dearly for giving the straight-up facts about what the furry fandom is about. Hahaha, also, I happen to be one of the several furries it talks about that hangs out in the "Games Room" at my school... it's a pretty fun place. :3

Doesn't take into account the "equal" thing, but I couldn't help myself xD

Actually, yeah, they do: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2569634/ (nsfw)
Furries are just as bad as any fandom. But no worse, except I think we do draw in more than our fair share of morons, pedos, and zoophiles. The majority of us are just normal people, though.

People are afraid of what they don't understand. Most people hear about furries from the wrong sources and don't REALLY see that it's harmless fun and nothing to be afraid of... but since they don't know and often hear about it from OTHERS who don't understand and associate it with something totally off-base like bestiality, they too end up hating it. :( Sad but true... which is why I LOVE articles like these that give the straight-up facts and don't distort it like some sources do...
true, back then i used to have that mentally of people who like anime/otakus, but thanks to a few freinds who took me to an anime club, wacthed a few series their and on youtube, and explored the genre, i really like the people and idea.
Of course, you will get a few mistakes, but a few here and their does not tarnish what matters, having fun

I gotta admit, I laughed. Some furries take things too seriously.
Of course we're people too, we've always been people and always will be. No better or worse than anyone else, and I find that constantly playing the victim card is just as damaging to the fandom's reputation as portraying furs as a bunch of animal humping freaks.

To me the article was a little too serious, hehe. I mean, Furries ARE sort of like baseball fans, or anime fans, Trekkies, Star Wars nerds, or the people who cosplay Avatar in public. The article isn't bad, I just sorta thought it was playing it up a bit. We're people, they're people, we just have different interests. We're no more special, hated, accepted, or rejected than any other interest group. Thinking anything else is giving us too much credit.
The 'victim card' thing was more or less a comment on...well some of the comments, plus general furry attitudes. "We're being FURSECUTED! ZOMG! WRY DO YOU DIS THING TO US?!" First of all, if I ever hear someone say the word 'fur-secuted' to my face, I'd probably punch them in theirs. It's an annoying word. Second, Jews in Nazi Germany were persecuted, furries are a subculture that -Chan 'tards enjoy trolling. Every time there's a big furry backlash to any furry controversy I think it makes us as a fandom look doubly bad.
In short: Too much drama furries. Tone it down, plzkthnx
(Also, no offense is meant by any of this. I tried to word this in the most non-confrontational way possible, so I hope no one tries to turn /this/ into drama.)

Actually, I couldn't agree more on everything you just said. XD You're right... it -is- very serious and we're people just like anyone else. x) Also, yeah, I agree in that it's not the best solution to fight "drama with drama". x) Never did like it or get involved in it. Very sound argument you have.
... except there is loads of porn with his fursona in. Harmless? Yes. Does it look strange to other people? Yes.
IMHO I can understand why people are freaked out about the porn. At the same time, it's fucking harmless and really only meant for us.
Furries are almost like the new hippies in terms of reactions people will get. They will either love us or hate us because we look like fucked up social deviants. We sorta are, and we need to accept that and roll with it rather than worry what our reputation is.

Yes, we who take the fandom in THAT sense need to accept that... but the term "FURRY" doesn't always include that. Evidently there are actually more furries that DON'T partake in "yiff" than those that do. I accept my sexual attraction towards it and won't lie about it, but the article is about furries as a whole, not just us deviant. ;P
I think what defines us is shallow in and of itself. Two people who are furries may not have anything in common. Most of my friends are not furs, and they don't care that I am one. They think its freaky, but they are usually weirder than I am anyway.
In short, I won't just go hang out with someone because they are a furry. I have horror stories about when I do.

Haha, yes, it's true that furries aren't always compatible. Still, it's also true that, in many cases, people tend to hang out with those they share common interests with and being a furry often times creates that bond and that's all they need. Not always, you're right, but often. Also, yes, you're very right in that the definition of a "furry" is a shallow one... but that's why the term "yiff" need not be included in that definition since not all furries like yiff. :P
In conclusion, all non-furs should immediately disregard the mountains and mountains of porn you'll find by typing "furry" into any search engine.
Are we scary, animal-fucking rapists? No.
Is the average person weirded out by the sheer amount and style of furry porn out there? Probably.
Is 90% of all the porn perfectly harmless? Sure.
Is saying that being furry is all just about communing with animal spirits and the art that communing inspired a little disingenuous? Yeah, probably.

Yeah, but go look at my response to Hipstar earlier in the comments. The article is about "furries", not just the ones into yiff. xP Griff was VERY close in his definition of what a "furry" is since porn isn't part of the definition of what makes a furry... we just often choose to MAKE it pornographic. xP
Not my comment, but responding anyway:
Porn is an element of almost.... no... of EVERY fandom. Ever. Seriously. If there are fans, there are porns.
Go ahead, google American Idol. There's slash fiction. There's even illustrated porn of CSI, of the very episode that gave us a bad rep! There are real, official, non-fan made pornos based on major movies.
There's always gonna be porn everywhere you go. GENERALIZING here, furries are more open about not just porn, but taboo sex, kinks, fetishes, things like that. I think it's less of "That horse man is having sex with that dog man!" that's frightening mainstream people as "That wolf man is being EATEN by the horse man's cock!" We're by no means the only fandom that does it (I was desensitized to a lot of this stuff by other fandoms before I got here) we just seem to be the ones that seem to be the most openly accepting of taboo sex, and that's going to affect a lot of socially conservative people's opinion of us. The best way to solve this is to say.... fuck socially conservative people. Who needs them anyway?

Amen to needing to tone it down! I admit, I like me some furry pronz... but I also try and get a decent amount of NON-YIFF commissions because balance is necessary not what being a "furry" is about. xP I really do feel a bond with wolves and have since I was little, so bringing myself back to that always feels nice. :)
