A final version, if I ever get to it, may be completely different. For starters, I don't like this shape that much, nor how it came out. I couldn't draw the other wing and make it look good.
And that is why I don't make comics -- when it comes to drawing backgrounds and anything other than figures, I just don't cut the mustard. :P
But I sort of wanted to give more or less an idea of how I more or less envision the ship.

well its decent enough i guess... don't get me wrong, it looks good, it's just personal preference speaking here.
you see, when it comes to larger ships, especially capital size, i prefer a more... well i suppose you could say bulkier design. it suits a large capital ship better than a streamlined shape, which should be reserved for the starfighters.
i have to admit i never played halo myself, but i saw a couple of cutscenes on youtube and mods for space based games and i really like how the human ships look in the halo games. pretty bulky and all... it really suits them, especially when it comes to cruisers or battleships.
have you ever watched babylon 5? the human faction in babylong 5, the earth alliance, also sports a whole lot of rather great looking ships. big, somewhat bulky but intimidating vessels.
but i suppose i am digressing here a little :-P
anyway, what does Rapthor's ship look like? I suppose he's flying a much smaller cargo vessel or transport... perhaps heavily modified for increased speed and better armaments? :-P

The ship may be a bit large, but the design is intentional. If the ship ever needs to make an emergency landing, the streamlined shape will help it move far easier through an atmosphere.
Of course, landing something that big will be extremely difficult -- that would be the last option for its Commander. The odds are that the ship will be severely damaged, with the loss of many crewmembers. But a good number would survive and live until they were rescued.
Much larger ships would look rather different.

I don't know anything about drawing, nevermind about drawing ships. But
seriayne has some cool ships in her gallery and might be able to pass on some tips.

Allowing for the intent to allow aerodynamic flight[1], there is only one real problem with the design. It is also the single most common error in SF spaceship design: The bridge is exposed.
When you're in an environment that renders vision useless as an external sensor, such as space, there is no use in giving the bridge windows. Without windows, you can put the bridge anywhere: Including right in the middle of the ship where a single glancing blow can't take it out.
[1] There is absolutely no reason for a pure spaceship to have decks parallel to the direction of thrust. There are very good reasons to have the main engines pointing 'down', even if you do have things like gravity generators.

It's true that it could be more protected in the middle, but I'm thinking that some kind of escape mechanism were designed so that the whole Bridge separates and turns into an escape shuttle. So it would be more practical to have it on top.
As for the windows, it's just a matter of how things have been shown in uncountable shows, movies and comics. And I honestly don't want to spend a whole lot of time coming up with "unconventional" ways to design things for something that is barely more than a pet project. It's basically "Star Trek" with dinosaurs, to put it mildly.

Well, I did say it is the most common error in ship design. But note that I wasn't so much dissing windows, but noting that they generally have no use in ship operations.
As for Trek: I've long found it amusing that Star Trek bridges don't have windows, yet they still stick the bridge on the outside.
Now, your idea to combine the bridge into an escape shuttle isn't actually a bad one and does give a reason for the bridge to be close to the surface. But it might be better to use something like a high-wing layout which places the bridge below the engines and both below the wings. This would give two advantages, first it makes the connections to the rest of the ship easier, second it places more stuff between the bridge crew and the outside.
