I've always loved Biafra and its history and its role in the Nigerian Civil War, and when Banon needed something to draw, I suggested Jess in the uniform of Rolf Steiner's Biafran regiment. He used used a skull and crossbones as his symbol as a reminder of the risks inherent to war, rather than a reference to the Jolly Roger or anything like that. Steiner was an interesting figure that I am glad I learned about, and partially inspired me to suggest this.
