Ash Kendrick (The Beatrider Reference Sheet 2020)
In a world like ours,
and yet unlike ours,
was a white wolf named Ash who rode the drums,
never stepping quite on beat
but vibing smugly all the same.
Scaleback:
a world wrought of magic and anthropomorphic races of beast.
Technomancers:
they who use magic to power, wield and advance technology. All white wolves, the Archives, are born as these mages, but none else. The other anthros rely on magics that are old, metals that are whir-less, elements that have always been.
Beatrider:
a kind of technomancer, whose power comes from their own live-produced, sequenced beats of drum and sample. Strength, speed and reflexes can be augmented and double-jumps performed.
Ash Kendrick:
a young adult wolf on a ride of rhythm, glory and adventure. He wears a hoodie, a jacket and a fresh pair of pawsneaks. And legend has it, beneath all that there’s a shirt.
He carries a backpack, a rhythboard and a pair of headphones. Also, sometimes, a sampler, aka a beat pad. But Flagg, hovering by his side, usually carries that.
Lest he fall off beat, his day starts with a coffee and ends with a milkshake.
Flagg:
Ash’s AIDE (Artificial Intelligence DEputy). This mechanical dragon likes (1) believing he has free will, (2) wandering astray, and (3) banging really hard on the beat pad.
The Beatrider, an epic fantasy novel.
See you in 2021-2022.
Thank you once again,
TRPCAfterDark, for the amazing art. <3 You pounced on my vision and pinned it down.

Types of beat machines vary, and AIdes vary, especially! However, the use of beat machines is integral to the technomancy that grants riders power. So beat machines are a commonality among all the magical genres of the Archive wolves. And boards - well, they give a rider momentum. They waken the rider's power. They are a rider's equippable, magical drumline, so to speak, in that riding them sustains the rider's magical enhancements. They can dismount for a time and fight on foot, even using the board as a surprisingly lightweight combat weapon or shield... but they must eventually get back on it to sustain their augmentations.
Still answering your question about genres: think of the prevalence of music used for magic like the prevalence of pop music on Earth.
Since power is given to those who wield it within the confinements of the certain machines and boards through which that power is gained; and since magical power is desirable, certain musical styles do hold monopolies of interest. Tunnelbeat is the genre that Ash derives most inspiration from, which is like our equivalent of hip hop. You'll find music similar to rock and orchestral there. The music has a harsh resonating reverb akin to the sound of playing in a tunnel or in a mountain.
Most music is played on beat machines, regardless of genre. There was live music and there were live instruments, including of brass and wind and string. But much has been digitized since then.
I've wondered about this question before. I'm early into thinking about it, but I am sorting it out as best as I can to answer.

Maybe music recorded with real guitars, bass, drums, etc. could be seen as something performative. The Beatmachines have (assumedly) since surpassed them in sound quality and accuracy, so knowing how to play one could be seen as something akin to knowing how to ride a horse in the modern day, even though you can get about just as easily with a car.
Either that, or you can have some sort of laser-keytar setup where they blast neon beams from the headstock because the people who play them are just that extra lol
