Enjoy the story I guess! Need to write about this draggo more often 🐉
The jade dragoness blinked slowly and reached up to clear sleep from her eyes, before propping her head up on her hand, staring at her swirling coffee on the table.
Kari was not a morning creature, partly being that dragon biology is tuned for long periods of uninterrupted slumber, but also because she thought dusk was a much nicer time than dawn. Places like this diner, that operate in the limbo as the sun rises, were pretty foreign to her.
The sound of a scraping wood chair, and she was snapped back to reality. Across from her, the companion she came to the diner with sat down as well, drowsiness actually seeming to hit him too for once. After all, they'd been travelling for days, the journey tends to take it's toll in more ways than one. The two were dressed casual, Kari in a tee and skinny jeans, while the man's jeans had fashionable tears at the knees, and he wore a loose short-sleeve button-up over his black shirt.
Kari moved her eyes up to match the human's, not moving a muscle otherwise. She held eye contact with him for several moments, trying not to smirk as she'd caught him in a simple game of will. Her master had some dumb thing about spontaneous games, but he broke the brief silence with a smirk of his own this time, asking:
"You going to drink your coffee, Kari?"
Kari, feeling slightly victorious, slowly uncoiled herself and swirled the dark drink, before sliding the saucer to her companion and leaning back down on the table.
"It's nasty anyway. All yours."
The human added another packet of sugar to the brew and stirred while his brow creased a little,
"We'll be getting there in a few hours, figure you'd be more interested to see this than I'd be."
Kari leaned around in the diner seat while her master droned on, back and forward, side to side, stretching her serpentine frame. Her wings flexed to fill the cubic space behind her, coming close to some potted plants that would have likelly preferred not to be tipped by an errant appendage. Once she was done stretching, the expression she got from her master drove that little spark in her mind that said "do that again and make sure it looks deliberate". For now, Kari settled her head back down onto a hand and drew her phone out from her pocket, letting it lazily clink onto the wooden table.
"Yeahhh.. Well, if this is actually some mystical sacred grove, guess what? No idea what i'm supposed to do once we're there."
A single clawed finger swayed over a search box.
"What's it called again? I'll just read about it."
Kari's master downed the last of the coffee and set the mug down, eyeing Kari's wagging finger before giving her a slight look that ceased the wagging.
"It's not going to be online, what kind of sacred grove would come up when you ask for directions? However," He paused and got a curious eyebrow from Kari, "it is supposedly an actual sacred grove, you're correct. The game is that it's hidden and we've obtained the key."
Kari tried her hardest not to roll her eyes and laugh at her master's face. Yeah, this key was an intricate, decorated dagger he'd gotten from one of his many contacts that owed him something. Did they need a sacrifice to go with it? The dragon arched her back and flared her wings again dramatically, both hands gripping the table, until an audible pop and sigh signaled that she'd cracked that one spot that had been bugging her the last 30 minutes. She leaned forward once more, folded her wings against her back, and began idly flicking through the dead, early-morning feeds on her phone.
Her master ignored her display and gestured for the waitress across the diner, who acknowledged him with a quick finger to confirm she'd seen him.
"Once we get there anything might happen. Your guess is as good as mine, but I do want to see what it's about, call it curiosity. Figured your dragon instincts would be going nuts at the possibility of checking out a mythical place."
The tip of Kari's tail flicked at the word "instincts", she looked over the top of her phone for a second before looking back down. Her companion was tapping thru his own phone while they waited on the waitress.
"Treasure hunting? Then what's he need me for?" Sure, she was for all intents and purposes considered a dragon, but instincts? Ugh. Her master had made it sound like just going to this magic hotspot would bestow ancient wisdom or give them some pseudoscience powerup. She had a buzzing feeling they'd only find some grimy stones or a hut trying to hawk souvenirs once they finally got off the highway. Sooner this road trip was over, and she was back home in her custom-made dream of a bed, the better.
Kari sucked in a quiet breath and held it before letting it out slowly. The dragon had already gotten away with several articles of sass this morning, so she felt she didn't need to keep tipping that scale into the negative for no reason.
"You really seem sure this is legit, so.." another flick of her tail and a smile revealing her teeth. "let's find out. Now, are we going to eat, or what?"
We can say that this takes place before the mystical scene featured in On the path, with the perspective of Kari's master (who I still can't think of a fitting name for).
Hope you guys enjoy this somewhat wholesome piece!
