I remember reading somewhere that the "traditional" Jedi robes are only for "formal" occasions, and in the field, Jedi can wear whatever they feel like, often disguises. I had to do the belt and such from memory.
I also wanted something that would conceivably fit into Star Wars canon. Jedi Nova is Clone Wars era. She dies during order 66.
And yes, she's a Shien-style user. (Backwards lightsaber grip) :B

Given the Mary-sue portrayal of the Jedi in the prequel trillofy, I would too. But then so would everyone else. :x
I wish I could fit her into Timothy Zhan/Thrawn Trilogy-era/The good 'ol pre-prequel trilogy era Star Wars Star Wars EU, but I couldn't think of a way to make it work.

We choose to ignore the prequels and a lot of the new canon. Maybe it's because we're old and we grew up on the good old gritty stuff!

What about a new jedi? Luke Skywalker style, training by some old dude on a mountain. Or trained herself based on old stories, maybe found old holocubes (or holocrons(!)) on the black market or some such.
It seems like sufficiently motivated Force sensitives can develop their own abilities, but it would just take longer.
