I think it's more a matter of "acceptance under protest" rather than want. He can see he's not going to get rid of her easily, just from walking away. She's liable to follow him every step of his life until he lets her repay him. So, he's indulging her, so that she will stop, but, under protest.
I'm sure he has his own baggage/reasons for not wanting a "tag along".
Perhaps he just likes his solitude. Or, perhaps he's lost too many close friends in the past and doesn't want to risk getting close to someone else, for fear of losing them, too.
Or, maybe he just needs to be at the pier on time to catch his boat. XD

I don't know which I love more, in that second panel... her cleavage, or her pouty face. XD
This hyena is SO ADORABLE! A lovable combination of scruffy, sexy, and... perky. I really don't know how else to describe her attitude but perky. I really hope we see more of her, after this comic. Even if just occasional pinups.
