Squirrels have actually have smooth brains, but they are still considered very intelligent for their size. It's a common myth that no gyri = low intelligence/can't think. In fact, the vast majority of animals on earth have no brain wrinkles (gyri) gyri are only present in a few mammals, but not rodents, marsupials, manatees, etc. But also, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and invertebrates don't have gyri either.
