I'd wager the innate skepticism most people feel when presented with 'proof' of the supernatural acts as the best safeguard against the truth getting out -- most wouldn't believe him if he went public with it, and the handful that did believe him wouldn't have any easier of a time convincing anybody else. (Hell, I do believe in the supernatural, and even I react to grainy footage or trailcam photos with a hearty 'Okay, what am I actually looking at?')

As a counter to trail cams I would think a human intelligence with heightened smell would just scent them and most hidden observation devices out.

Yeah, I'd imagine the sterile scent of plastic would stand out against a natural backdrop, particularly when you know what the scent is.

In my Urban Fantasy world this is pretty much the case, but it's honestly very authoritarian but the whole question I wanted to answer was what would it take to keep the supernatural secret. Turns out a loooot of brain washing and magic hypnosis at best.
