Yo look it up, apparently in some old manga they wrote Sonic being the alter ego of a furry boy named Nicky. I made some head canon doodles on how friends in comparison to how he writes them as in the world of Sonic.

So I immediately wondered how his rivalry with Shadow came into play. I tried incorporating Sonic’s competitiveness with Nicky’s dorkiness to something a smart kid like Shadow could rival him in. Chess teams! With those timers, Nicky can be all about speed too. I also thought it’d be funny to incorporate how Shadow is much younger than Sonic into this rivalry :o)
