What Motivates You?
“What motivates you? What drives you to create? What obligation do you have when you put the tip of a pencil on a piece of paper? What is going through your mind? Concepts. Ideas. Stories. Something funny. Something sad. Something sexy. What should it be?
When you draw, who is it for? Do you draw for yourself or for someone else? Do you draw for your own pleasure, or for another?
When you draw, who are you? Who do you think you are when you create? Do you have a name you call yourself when you create? Do you feel a sense of power? A sense of responsibility? A sense of purpose? Who are you?
When you place the pencil tip on the canvas, you are planting a seed in the vast white soil you call paper. With every line you trace with your pencil, a root grows and a bud arises. You have no idea what kind of flower you planted. You’re just watching it grow - molding and changing it with every curved and straight line you draw. It’s starting to come to bloom. You see the pedals start to open up before you as you now ink and color your image. You witness as it changes colors, hue after hue as you continue to add layers of color and detail to it. You are creating your flower, adding that to your garden of art.
At the end, do you feel connected to your flower? Is it what you wanted? Do you keep it in the ground or pluck it and throw it away? Did you create it for someone else? Would they like it or hate it? Would it attract attention to your garden?
Who did you create the flower for anyways?

I love the picture and the description is just beautiful. Really I draw for others and my mind keeps telling me that I draw to gain other people's attention and to keep myself distracted from thoughts of depression. Even though I don't draw vent art I still draw to keep my mind away from other things that I hate.
I love this Drawing and The Description it has with it. I draw because of the stories in my head and also My interests in certain time periods (for me ww2 styled themes and clothing). I draw in school and people think I'm homicidal because of all the Gore I put into my Crazed like Characters but I'm not.. Its just what I draw -3-''. I also can say music i guess because it puts images in my head and stories and i draw them out. The stories i don't write because i'm not really good at writing. What Inspires/Motivates you??
Thinking about it of what you have typed, I never really thought of what really motivates me.... I've always just sat there and drew. Usually I get told that I can be a bitch if I drew sometimes or I am way too much of a depressed person. I don't know what really pushes me to draw... I might have to sit down one day and figure that out... I don't feel like an artist if I don't know what really motivates me...
I don't draw art myself, but I think the main motivation to post art is the instant attention and gratification. Nothing gives quite the ego boost as much as somebody else commenting "hey that's cool!" on your work. And it helps to have fellow artists give constructive criticism.
No offence, but I don't think you understand artists at all :) If you think a day's worth of effort is made up for by a handful of faceless internet-people nodding and commenting "yeah, it's nice," then you're much mistaken. The goal is often not even to have a finished picture, nor to post it, nor to receive attention; it is to go through the process of creating the picture and improving your technique. That's why it's an art form :)
Most of us would draw even if there were no places to display the pictures and the only person who ever saw them was ourselves. We draw it because it's what we're designed for, our brains make us feel good when we do, and miserable if we don't.
I won't lie; it is nice when we get positive feedback, it does help nudge us onwards when we're tired and struggling, it does add a boost and make us feel valued, and I encourage everyone who enjoys an artists work to keep informing them of the fact - but it's not mandatory, and they won't stop if you don't. The artist knows whether the work is good, and will be satisfied, or not, with it at the end. And then they will begin the next piece of work, because the process of making the art, is the goal.
I think I just answered the question too ^^;

Perhaps people work differently, but the reason I create art is that I don't know how NOT to create art. I get an idea and it has to get out somehow so I catch it on paper.
I guess if its soemthing at really motivates me its the freedom to take your thoughts and ideas and make them into an image without fear of getting censored or persecuted for it and how easily that freedom can be taken away. Just the sheer raw power of art to entertain us, shock us or makes us think, there's jsut something very inspiring about that.
I dunno if I'm maknig any sense, but there you have it.

Well, for me, beauty inspires beauty.
I create because I've listened to, watched, or viewed something wonderful. Sometimes I'm going through a new CD and am struck by inspiration when I listen to a particularly wonderful track, or I see a piece of artwork that is just so stunning that I feel compelled to write. Its usually not enough for me to just say 'Wow, what a gorgeous piece!'. I like to actually sit down, think about it, and then use the inspiration it created on something of similar scope. (In this case, it'd be an uplifting, inspiring story). Its something like 'paying it forward', but instead of generosity or giving things away, I'm just passing the inspiration along to someone else!
Most of the time, what I've written is for someone else's entertainment. While I might enjoy the characters I've created and the situations I've put them into, my joy is derived from other people's happiness. I love it when someone enjoys a piece of mine! Someone made my whole week when they printed off one of my stories and kept it in a binder for later reading, and every time someone asks about a character or situation, I know I've helped make their day, which, in turn, makes me happy. Its probably not the most interesting or unique way to create work, but its what drives me. =)

Very meaningful drawing and note about it.
I feel the same when I write or when I role play.
I feel a sense of attachment to anything I create. I feel responsible, I feel...connected to whatever I create.
I also create to understand - something closer will help me understand myself, something farther helps me understand others.

It's a chance to create my own world. Full of beauty and flaws. To take ideas and make them real by putting them on paper, then posting them for others to see and maybe they'd like them too. And even if no one saw, I'd still draw.
As someone else said, music. But everything around me can be an inspiration. Dreams as well, man I have some wacky dreams.
I think my creations are more interesting than me.

*smiles* the world around me.... when I see the beauty of the hills, the mountains, the oceans....... I can't help but feel warm and happy inside.... and when I look around sometimes I see a special someone who I know.... I can't help but adore and glomp..... motivation is the beauty which surrounds me in my mind and in what I see.... It is something I can not escape but why would I want to? ^_^
What motivates me to write? The ability to come up with strange and wonderful worlds, then take other people on them.
What motivates me to constantly seek improvement or exercise my creativity? Realizing that every watch, every fave, is a triumph over furs who rely on cliches instead of originality, who never read a good author with the question of what makes them good. Sometimes my ideas are not all that great, but every failure is a learning experience. A snobbish way of looking at the fandom perhaps, but then I've been burnt by the status quo a few times.

I write. Because I love doing it. It's quiet, soothing, meditative... Yet I can use 100% of my brain for a change. No mind-numbing chores or homework or driving from place to place... when I create a world, my mind runs wild, free to use everything I've ever learned in every aspect of life, intellectual or everyday. I roleplay several different characters at once, and I become multiple personalities. It's the playground of my mind.
