One thing I've always wondered about. Many times in the story, especially where Blue-Scale is handling Rangi (i.e. they're trying not to scratch something), Vanguard are referred to holding it with their claws "folded back." Do Vanguard claws have joints at the claws which allow them to pull the talons back, somewhat like the toes of a raptor?
As for your question, kinda; imagine something akin to being double-jointed, the last knuckle-joint can flex the other way, pulling the talons up and away from whatever surface they are manipulating. Using some technology and tools would be difficult with talons alone. Not folding all the way back, but up enough to avoid contact. I was being a bit lazy (in a literary way) by just saying "folding back" rather than explaining it all. Some "details" corners are cut because they don't really add too much to the story
