It appears more backstory art has shown itself this day. Again, I'm not going to get into specifics (yet), but know that the black spots are a result of acid burning the photo.

Gaze is alive, but was almost beat to death before being saved. His brother, named Thomas, is dead permanently. Thomas couldn't stay in the mortal realm, he couldn't since the dead go to their version of heaven. Thomas wanted to say goodbye and reassure him that he would be okay and that he still loved Gaze no matter what he did or what he was. Thomas was everything to Gaze.
Demons were first created by Apex, shortly after he created things called Reapers which took the souls of those who were seen as impure and go through a process that would create a vessel to 'house' souls in the demon body, the vessel. There isn't an exact Hell, but Apex's dimension is the closest thing to it. There's two ways to become a demon, and that's one of them. I'm not entirely sure how this would relate to what's being portrayed in the art though.
