I've always wondered if it's due to any associating serpent or snake characters with the one that convinced Adam and Eve to eat fruit from the forbidden tree.
Master Viper from the Kung Fu Panda series wasn't evil. Sesame Street had a snake as one of their characters back in the 70's (Don't know if he's still in Sesame Street).
