morning maud (probably my last post for a while)
the first pic of what was supposed to be the beginning of an ask maud series but I guess it will be put on hiatus from day 1.
long story short, with adobe flash pulling the plug, so is the paint I use for my digital artwork. Fortunately, the company behind my paint did an alternative but it's the most messed up art program I've tested. In the close future, I'll be trying other art programs (feel free to propose some in the comment section) but the death of my paint & the train wreck that was trying to draw the pic above has bummed me a bit, expect a hiatus for a little while art wise... :(

Paint Tool SAI is solid paint / draw software for sure. I've been using it for several years. It is only for Windows PCs. SAI has both painting (raster) and drawing (vector) tools, which can be mixed in the same artwork, but I'll warn that the vector side of things is a bit clunky to use. It can read and write its own file format, SAI2, as well as PSD/PSB (Photoshop), BMP, JPEG, PNG, and TGA. It will not load or save GIF files; they have to be converted (for that, I recommend XnViewMP, a very capable free file converter that has no ads or other junk).
The price is ¥5500 (about USD $53 as of this posting).
There is a bit of a learning curve, but there are also plenty of online tutorials for using it, as it's been around a long time.

As I mentioned to BigCDoodles above, I use Paint Tool SAI.
From what I understand, the free versions of FireAlpaca and Medibang Paint Pro are ad-supported. Other than that, I've heard good things about both. You can remove ads from FireAlpaca by getting FireAlpaca SE for about USD $40. There is currently no paid option to remove ads from Medibang Paint Pro.
Paint.NET is an alternative that has no ads, but its download page has a bunch of distracting advertisement buttons on it. If you do decide to get it, here's the actual free download page: https://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html -- (or you can go to getpaint.net, and click on the -text- link "paint.net 4.2.14" in the upper right... then choose the button for the dotPDN free download, and, ah, end up at the same page I linked above. :) )
Paint.NET does not include a stroke smoothing feature, but I just tested it with Lazy Nezumi Pro and that seems to work fine with it.
