It's my super secret method . . . my model is anything BUT hairy, in fact.
What I do is take a photo of dark fur with a little white scattered in it, use Invert to flip the darks and lights (and usually color correct it), then set the layer blend mode to Multiply at 80% or so opacity, making sure the fur direction is correct. This is in Photoshop Elements.

I've never quite understood that particular repulsion - if it's there, it's there. We are mammals. I think it's seen as dirty, somehow, but as long as someone takes baths that shouldn't be an issue. I remember mentioning I liked seeing a thick trail of hair on the nape of the neck and the other folks I was with reacting in horror. I said, "It gives you something to hang on to!".
