It looks like Coco lost her overalls when she and her brother Crash washed ashore onto a faraway deserted island after they were caught in a storm. So she really needed new clothes now, otherwise she would go bottomless like Ripper Roo. Meanwhile they have to find a way out of this uninhabited island while Coco gets stuck half naked.

This also explains why Coco changes her outfits throughout the games.
