A quick night snapshot last Saturday night of the Crim Theatre in downtown Kilgore TX. Built in the 1930's during the areas oil boom it hosted several premiere movies, stars like Gene Autry, and Elvis saw a movie here back in the mid 50's. The theater was shut down in the 70's and fell in disrepair.
In the past 20 years the Kilgore Historical Preservation Society has spent a lot of money restoring the outside, signs, neon lights and fixing a leaking roof that was ready to cave in. But they haven't raised enough money to do anything inside, which is now a big empty shell with everything removed.

They predict it would cost 1.5-2 million dollars to renovate it into a community theater. But in this economy who knows if it will ever get done. At least it doesn't look like a dump anymore. And I've also heard they've been trying to convince the state government to make the theater a landmark.
Yeah I went to Kilgore High school, grew up there and everything. I can't remember how many times I passed by that place wondering what was going to become of it. Old Downtown Kilgore has a lot of history. I mean the oil from the ground in that area where you were taking that picture helped clobber Germany in WWII. Downtown Kilgore is a symbol of the oil boom and an icon of our country's energy history, not to mention a still in-tact portrait of old, small town America. It needs to be preserved as much as possible. The fact that the theater is still at least there and not going to fall into a pile of rubble is good to hear. I'll actually leave Dallas and be over in that area tomorrow. My mother (who still lives out there) broke her arm yesterday and I'm going to go check on her. It'll be nice to see home again =)
That really looks great, it's a shame it isn't functional inside. There is a really nice looking old theatre in Eastland, TX, the Majestic, but they only show movies weekends and so we didn't get to see the show the time we stayed there. The Paramount in Abilene is also real nice.
In Midland they are preparing to get another one of the old theatres going (the Ritz) as a communty theatre/independent film theatre and they plan to restore the facade to the original.
