A little bonus!Back on December 29, I created my first art summary to celebrate my return to art after years of absence. It was a great feeling getting to almost fill the whole thing up, but not too long ago, I felt the desire to do that not only for last year, but for the previous decade (plus last year). I feel like this would also give me a chance to talk about some older art pieces that I did years ago now that my views and writing abilities have changed. So, without further ado...
2010🟢 The Yoshi Ball 🟢May 25, 2010This is probably the start of my deep dive into strange and interesting drawing ideas. I wrote a fairly lengthy description in the original upload basically detailing the experience of going through the Spherisizer from Mario Pinball Land from the Game Boy Advance, except instead of throwing Mario into it, it was Yoshi. There were many picks for 2010 that I could've chosen to be my favorite for the year, but I felt this one had to be it because it was about significance than anything else; this is probably where I started drawing more toony and squishy things, so I kinda owe this drawing to that.
2011🟢 Bros' BuddyBall 🔴March 1, 2011And to further examplify my point, an idea like this was born. The BuddyBall was a somewhat short-lived idea that took the concept of Poké Balls but removed their limitation of only capturing Pokémon, allowing them to be used on other creatures; in this case, other Softies. Kye at the time was less mature at the time than he is now, so he was far more willing to mess around and try random things like this, and he was lucky that his brother Sacred (SDragon01) was willing to do those things with him.
I also chose this one not only because I thought the idea was fun, but also the way I drew it. I still think this came out really well for how I drew at the time, such as the angles for the BuddyBall and the shoes hanging out on the ground. I also really liked the way it was colored, I recall being a bit reckless in the beginning but with The Yoshi Ball and this, how I took extra consideration for the direction I colored to make it look cleaner, I felt that this held up. I think this is also one of the very few times I actually added some shadowing too.
2012🦖Kye O'Doyle | Version 2.5 & The Epic Remaster 🦖January 4 & 5, 2012This update for Kye was easily my most ambitious at the time, I had so many ideas for him around this time that culimated into this big and honestly underutilized version of my heroic dinosaur. This was also the first time I put alot of effort into a digital drawing, using color in the lines rather than making them black. It takes a little more time to do, but visually, it looks amazing and it's something that I can't believe I have to say I've been doing for nine years now. I suppose, though, if there were any takeaways from this, something I would bring back from this design, it would be the necklace. I still like how it looked. Maybe a retrofit is in order...
2013🐲 The Skills of the Draggie 🦖September 10, 2013A gift for my friend LilArrin, I remember coming home from class(?) and came up with this idea and had a very strong desire to draw it when I got home. It was very much like Draggie to just casually and somewhat teasingly hold Kye up squished in a ball like that. The wearing of his own stuff was a bonus. I realize even now that I still have practice to do with my Dragonites.
2014 → 2019This is where things dropped off entirely. Even though I have something shown for 2016, 2018, and 2019, I consider 2014 to be the start of the hiatus, as I lost my Dad to cancer in April. Prior, I had just started working and was also in college, so dealing with all three things at once was tough, and then to have it lead up to that, I felt that I just lost alot of my motivation for art, and you can see where it led.
2016🦖 Kye O'Doyle | Version 3.6 🦖June 22, 2016
An update to Kye was the only thing I made all year, as I had more ideas thanks to roleplays I was still doing, and decided to finally put that to paper and make it so. A sort of mix of old and new, and looking back on it, it was really a clutter of ideas that I also wasn't entirely using.
[center][b]2018🍪 Kyle the Yoshi | 2018 Update 🍪May 26, 2018⚡️ Rae Raichu ⚡️October 9, 2018Although I wasn't formally back into art at this point, this was the first time in five years that I had drawn more than one thing during the entire year, and I remember that was a nice feeling, even if it was shortlived. First up was an update to my Yoshi, which still holds up today, and helped serve as an extra base for Doughshi's update last month. Then, in October, I drew a Raichu for the first time. The character Rae was already developed by this point, but it got to a point where it motivated me enough to want to draw him. I'd still say for a first time, it came out alright, but it can only get better from there.
2019🥚 Dot Togepi 🥚April 16, 20192019 was once again a year that I only drew one thing in, but it was also a surge of inspiration during my Pokémon phase that year. At this point, I was working my way through Pokémon SoulSilver, and had made a character out of the Togepi you receive outside of the first city. The result was an idea for an Ioan Togepi, who's name was Dot! It was alot of fun to play with his design a little, and super easy to draw as well thanks to his simplistic shape. I still have fun sharing that he took down the Ecruteak Gym all by himself.
2020🍪 Kyle the Doughshi | Version 6 🍪December 11, 2020Of course, there isn't any other choice I'd make for this year other than finally being happy with a design for myself after mulling over it for so long, and loving it so much I could use it on another character of mine to update her as well! There were alot of favorites from art last year, I'd say 2020 is the year I drew alot of new things, specifically new creatures and characters. Rae, Chocolate, Primrose, Oakley, Oink-Oink... But no, when I've been dealing with my indecisiveness for years now and I can finally break away from it to make this, there's no other choice it could've been.
In ways, I feel like I've come a great distance since I first started drawing in 2010. But in others, I feel like I haven't. I feel like I'd be much further along with art if I had spent those six years of absence at least drawing something a month like I plan to do this year. It's why I made that goal, I feel more energized about art again and want to put more effort into it, so I hope to actually follow that goal and learn something new along the way.
Anyway, thank you for looking and reading! 💕
