A co-worker knows the general who led the military parade and gave the first salute to the new president. Both were stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI. He was just a Lt then.

Not necessarily...in order to get promoted into a position requiring Congressional confirmation, an officer has to have a record of political correctness that would make a USSR Communist Party zampolit blush. Many - perhaps most - of them come to believe it.
