The test subjects of Homestead convene for an announcement in the Great Hall, hosted by their elected representative, Leonidas, and Intramorph's head genetic scientist, Dr. Zachary Zwo.
Ryker and the other new test subjects are brought on stage and introduced to the rest of their small community.

We made our way out of the cafeteria with Asher and Cayden. I was shocked to see how many tables and booths had been setup since we started dinner. They had even set up a small stage! Everyone started to gather around the stage, there had to be a over 200 subjects here! I heard music in the background as we settled into an open area.
The music died down as two figures walked onto the stage. One of them was a massive and broad shouldered lion-man. The other was a spindly scientist with a long white lab coat that nearly went to the floor. He looked almost sickly with how thin he was. The doctor’s slender form ended with a sharp face and large, square glasses.
The lion-man spoke. “Welcome everyone! Welcome to another new subject meet and greet!” The audience broke into a short applause. He waved his large paws down, silencing the crowd, “now, we have six new subjects today, bringing our subject total to an even 230 subjects, including mentors!” He winked. “For you new guys, I’m Leonidas.” He grinned as he struck a royal pose. “And this man here is the Project Corse’s lead scientist, Dr. Zachary Zwo!” Another short round of applause rang out.
“Now,” Leonidas started pacing the stage, “enough about us! Let me introduce our new homesteaders!” A large round of applause rang out, even a few cheers, whistles, and howls. One of which came from Fynn beside me. I smiled. “First up, we have a mixed breed bull and racoon. He’s a bit more bullish than racoon, but don’t let that fool you. He’s got a bandit’s mask and a hard head on his shoulders. Heeeeeeeeeee’ssssss Benjamin Rockhouser!” A fresh round of applause made it’s rounds as a slim man pushed his way through the crowd. He was wearing similarly styled clothes to the ones that Cayden and I were wearing, but he also wore a red bandana with a black cowboy hat on his head.
I saw Dr. Zwo hand Benjamin a microphone as he stepped onto the stage. Benjamin waved to the crowd as he took center stage. “Hi! Uh yeah!”
Leonidas joined him and wrapped a furry arm around him. “So, what are you going to look like? Tell us about yourself. What things do you like to do in your free time?”
I saw Benjamin blush as he held up the microphone towards his mouth. “Well, I’m going to have brown and black fur, the black being everything racoon-ish. My tail is going to be a racoon’s tail. Uh, I’ll have hooves and an athletic frame that leans a little more bulky than slim.” He scratched the back of his head. “I like to watch old western movies. I also dabble in pick pocketing.” He lifted a balled fist, opening it to reveal a VitaWatch. Leonidas checked his wrist and chuckled.
“How entertaining! I think I know a club that you might like!” He pointed to one of the tables. “There’s a Western appreciation society. They enjoy the culture and intrigue of the old west. A lot of them specialize in things that people used to do during that time.” Benjamin smiled as Leonidas ushered him to stage left. “Let’s keep this momentum going!” He grinned. The crowd continued to cheer.
“Next up, we have another wolf among us, but this one is a little more timid. He’s one to take things slow. He’s a bit of a shell head with a wise man’s eyes. Heeeeee’ssssss Cayden Testudo!” Both Fynn and I cheered for Cayden as he made his way up to the stage. During the commotion, Dr Zwo had gotten the microphone back and handed it over to Cayden as he made his way to center stage. “Same questions, Cayden? Tell us about yourself!”
Cayden gripped the microphone with both of his hands as he held it up to his mouth. “Well I’m going to be a blue wolf with a very pale blue underbelly. Oh! And a turtle shell. My limbs are going to be a bit broader, like a turtle’s. Um, the doctor says that I’ll be able to retract my limbs into my shell. Uh, I enjoy reading and have a passion for making tea and other warm drinks!” His eyes shone when he started going into his passions.
“Well, I know just the club for you!” He pointed to a booth covered in boxes of tea, both bagged and loose. “The Tea and Coffee club love to experiment and make new mixes of all sorts of teas and coffees. They even dabble in a few carbonated drinks from time to time!” He winked at the audience again. He pushed Cayden next to Benjamin and got back to the ceremonies.
“Let’s move on, shall we? Our next man is quite the aviator! He’s loves the sea and sky, but now he brings it together in an imaginative combination! He’s part goose, part beaver! Heeeeee’sssss Mathew Barnaby!”
The crowd cheered as he made his way up to the stage and grabbed the microphone from Dr. Zwo. Before Leonidas could ask him to introduce himself, Mathew got right into it. “I’m going to be a Canadian goose with a beaver tail. I’m going to sprout wings on my back and my tail will be broad and strong. I’ll have a slim build with a strong chest. I still enjoy aviation and have had a hobby of carving little wooden miniatures of every plane I’ve flown.” He stood straight and tall, like a soldier.
Leonidas nodded, “I see. The Woodworker’s Guild is the place to be!” He leaned forward in a mock whisper, “especially since they hog the wood shop in the rec wing!” He pointed towards another booth with a variety of wood objects, from carvings to small furniture. “The Woodworker’s Guild is our largest club. So big, in fact, that we’ve split it into subdivisions based on different types of woodworking!” He ushered Mathew to the side with Benjamin and Cayden.
My heart pounded in my chest. I was almost up. “This next one is young. He’s spry. He’s another wolf with a reptilian spin! Heeeee’sssssss Ryker Rice!” Fynn cheered and clapped me on the back. He started howling alongside several others as I made my way up to the stage. I looked closer at my fellow subjects. They had the early signs of fur and feathers, like the peach fuzz from this morning, but I was completely covered in fur already! I gulped as I grabbed the microphone from Dr. Zwo whose eyes had grown to saucers. He continued to stare at me as I continued toward center stage. I heard a few gasps with my slightly enhanced hearing.
Suddenly, I felt extremely self-conscious of my appearance and grabbed the microphone with both hands like Cayden had. “You’re a furry one aren’t you?” Leonidas clapped me on the back. “You’re taking to the changes pretty well I see! Why don’t you tell us about yourself?”
I nodded as I held the microphone close to my darkened lips. “I’m going to be a wolf with rust red fur and a yellow-ish cream underbelly. I’m also going to have brown fur as accents where my human hair is supposed to be. I’m going to have a crocodilian tail with brown spines going from my tail to the base of my head. My tail will be covered in fur and my eyes and teeth will be a little sharper with crocodilian DNA. Uh, I like the more arts and crafts side of things. I want to get into sewing and stuff, but I also like to dabble in creative writing from time to time.”
Leonidas nodded as he wrapped his arm around me. “I don’t think there’s just one club I can suggest to you, but we have The Sewing Circle and Writer’s Reprieve. There’s also weekly arts and crafts time in the rec wing.” He led me to the rest of my fellow subjects who smiled at me and welcomed me to the growing club. Mathew wrapped his arm around my neck while Cayden gave me a high five. Benjamin gave me a wink and snapping finger guns. Just like that, I didn’t feel as self-conscious about myself. They accepted me. And that was okay.
Leonidas started up with his MC persona again, “Alright folks, two more new homesteaders to introduce. Our next man continues our reptilian trend with a Komodo dragon mixed with a bat. Yep, he’s going to be our resident dragon-man. He may not be able to spit fire, but he can spit words of fire! Heeeee’sssss Sebastian Rex!”
I looked into the cheering crowd for Sebastian, but I didn’t see anything. In the corner of my vision, Dr. Zwo handed a microphone off to someone. He was covered in scales. With how friendly the other new guys had been, I didn’t even notice when Dr. Zwo slipped the mic from my grip. He sure is quiet. Sebastian walked quickly to Leonidas’ side. His scaly hide made me feel better, knowing that there was someone else who took to their changes quickly too. He was a broad man with dark emotionless eyes.
He made his way to center stage and started talking. “I’m Sebastian,” he groaned like an emo kid in high school. “I’m going to be a black scaled Komodo dragon with a blood red underbelly with yellow eyes and bat wings.” He spun around. “I also enjoy writing poetry, dark, depressing poetry. I do enjoy a good comedy from time to time.” He handed the mic to Leonidas and shuffled next to me.
I smiled and waved at him. I whispered, “It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who’s changing faster than expected.”
He nodded and whispered back, “Yeah, uh, what kind of creative writing do you like?”
I held my chin as I thought back on the writing I’ve done. “I guess I like fantasy fiction. I like thinking about alternate worlds where things were different or happened faster there than it has here.”
He nodded back and gave a slight smile. “Let’s hang out sometime, okay?”
I grinned back, “I’d like that!”
I had made a friend. I had also not noticed that Leonidas had called up the next and final subject. Fortunately, I had managed to catch his name: Vince Oden.
“Tell us about yourself Vince.” I heard Leonidas say.
“Yeah, I’m going to be a snake mixed with an otter. I’m not going to have a long slithering tail like the other snake men, but instead an extra long and flexible torso. I’m going to have a cobra-like hood. I’m going to be covered in scales and have strong legs with webbed feet with a slightly longer otter tail. I like all things Italian and want to make…stuff.”
“Any stuff in particular, Vince?” Leonidas asked.
“I dunno, just stuff. Stuff I can sell at least.”
Leonidas nodded, “got it. Well, the best club I could think of right now is the Business Man’s Club. They talk about how to sell things and turn your hobbies into sources of income. For Italian stuff, I’d have to say that making an Italian centric club would be a great opportunity for us if you decide to start one. If you’re interested, talk to me after we let you go to peruse the other clubs.” He herded Vince to us as he started to wrap things up.
“My time with you all is almost up.” He looked back to us subjects. “But before we let you go, Dr. Zwo has a couple of announcements for everyone.”
He stepped off to the side as Dr. Zwo took center stage. “I always enjoy getting to see our new subjects at every facility I visit! I never get tired of seeing the new faces and happy lives you all are living here in Homestead.” He pulled out a paper from one of his pockets. “We’ll be doing renovations to the outdoor area of the Homestead.” I heard several cheers. “Intramorph will be publicly announcing Project Corse sometime next month. Higher ups have slated for the gene mods to release next year. In the meantime, between now and launch, we’ll have some film crews to tape footage for a commercial. As for the actual renovations, the fields will be expanded, and the wall replaced with a see through wall to expand sight lines.”
He turned as everyone started applauding. He turned with a big smile, “Although, I do have one more thing to share with you all.” The cheers grew louder. His smile broadened. “Intramorph has bought a hefty sum of land in western Colorado, Eastern South Carolina, and western Oregon. All three of these will be developed into small towns for you all to live in the post-launch period of Project Corse. You all will have opportunities for work at any of the three you choose, but remember that other Intramorph facilities will also have people eyeing jobs there.” He spun around and pointed to the crowd. “The point of these towns is to integrate you all back into full society by having these hubs of beast-folk across the country, in addition to our facilities.” He turned towards us new guys. “You six will also have those opportunities.” I smiled. “This is a massive step for Intramorph. So, I hope you all consider what I’ve said tonight and have fun!” He turned away and stepped off of the stage.
The crowd cheered once more with howls and fist pumps. Once the applause died down a bit, Leonidas took the stage again and addressed the crowd. “I know that that was a very exciting announcement, but don’t forget what the point of tonight is: to say hello to our new homesteaders and maybe convince them to join your club!” He winked. “Alright, that concludes the ceremonies.” He turned towards us. “You guys are free to roam about the main hall. I’ll call out when it’s time for you guys to go to bed. You’ll grow faster the more well rested you are.” He smiled at Sebastian and I. “Alright, let’s have some fun!”
With that, the six of us made our way off of the stage and reunited with our mentors. They stood beside us as we made our way around the hall, saying hello to people and perusing the tables. The night became a bit of a blur, but I ultimately signed up for The Sewing Circle. If ordering more outfits cost a lot of money, then I might just want to learn how to make some of them myself.
At some point, I heard Leonidas call for us new guys to head to our rooms. We all squeezed through the doors as our mentors followed behind. I waved goodbye to Benjamin, Vince, Sebastian, and Mathew.
Somehow, Cayden and I were neighbors! I said goodbye to Asher and Fynn, leaving it just between me and Cayden. “That was fun! I was a bit self-conscious about how quickly I was changing at first, but everyone was so nice!”
Cayden nodded, “Yeah, everyone is so welcoming and homely. It really feels like it’s all one big family!” He looked at his door. “And on top of that we’re neighbors too! It’ll be nice to have a familiar face to see everyday!”
I nodded and started to yawn. “Oh boy, *yawn* I better get inside before I pass out again!” We both chuckled. “We have got to hang out tomorrow. I feel so bad I missed our hang out this afternoon.”
“No problem, Ryker. If our schedules line up tomorrow, we’ll definitely do that!” I smiled and waved.
“I’ll see you in the morning then?”
“Yeah,” we opened our doors and headed inside.
I flopped onto my bed, wriggling out of my clothes and plopping them onto the floor. I almost drifted back into sleep when I heard my phone ring. Oh right. I forgot I didn’t have it with me. So much happened today.
I checked the screen; it was a text from my mom.
How was your first day?
I sat up against the wall as I started texting her.
It was really nice! Everyone here is so friendly. It’s like one big family here! I wish I could tell you more details, but I’m not allowed to right now…plus I’m about to fall asleep and pass out! *Laughing face emoji* I’ll keep you posted.
At that, I plugged my phone in and fell asleep.
Ryker and the other new test subjects are brought on stage and introduced to the rest of their small community.
