Top 3: Chocolate (LOU II #3) My Thoughts
REVIEW:
Probably the most controversial game in the world by its huge diversity of the story itself. There is going to be A LOT of talk about this one… This was a love/hate game by many and for a reason for that too. I’m one of the people out there that actually has a ‘like’ to this game. So I’m gonna be that Ratatouille critic here guys… Is it the best game ever? No. Does it deserve a Game of the Year reward? No. With that out of the way, I would like to continue ‘why’ I thought this game was REALLY good.
LOU1 has been influential and everybody started using a ‘duo’ relationship on every game I’ve come across like Last Guardian, God of War, etc… Honestly, if you all wanted to see the same story again from the second game, than I think it would be very boring. Anyway, as for game play wise, it’s pretty damn good. I felt nothing but empathy all around while in combat. Just like the first game, it’s all about sneaking by and killing without getting yourself detected by the enemy. Or you can go out a kill anyone in sight but that’s all up to you. Though, I like all my shooters in ‘stealth’ mode as I don’t like to be overpowered all the time. It’s all about being careful for your supplies and ammo. Interestingly enough, now there are infected and humans in some sessions and you can use this as your advantage by making noises. I think my worse threat is not the WLF, not the infected, it’s the Scars…. The freaking Scars… I hate those guys and they are way more tactical in the game. When they whistle, you know you’re in danger. And those guys with the sludge hammers are very very threatening. So game play wise… It’s amazing. It keeps me on my toes and I love the idea of crawling in the grass, thinking smart, and using new weapons on dealing each enemy (such as silencers are my favourite and that crafty bow). And yes… even the Abby sections are good. Sorry guys. And that accessibility… That accessibility is amazing. There’s soooo many options you can do before you start. I love the sound design as I can hear pretty clearly through my headphones. Every footstep and every creak is vital. I have to say, sneaking on the grass with my trusty bow is very tactical of your survival. Just remember that you have to play things smart.
Story wise, it’s pretty good. Not perfect but good. I thought the intersection against two main characters was smart and the cycle repeating itself over and over again was a stressful situation. After all, this is a story about revenge and hate. Though, I’ll be honest, I did find the relationships with the side characters are well… okay. But I don’t think the story is about ‘relationships.’ This one is about ‘themes’ and I think that was the point. It does make sense in a way… That’s okay but I kinda feel a little derailed once in a while but overtime, I started to grow a bit more attached. However, if you want my opinion about ‘Abby’ I will say that I am NOT a fan of her at all but I empathize the losses, the suffering, etc… Though, I do see that was the point as well. You’re not supposed to root for her and this was a bald and an extremely risky move. And trust me, this was a very tough one to accept and I felt extremely uncomfortable playing as her. And I do see why people hate it and they have the right to do so. It is not a game for everyone. However, I’m gonna leave that all up to you on this one. I was pretty satisfied and I felt nothing but empathy and depressed on both sides of this story as this is a full circle. It is damn good but not perfect… Loss is a real thing after all. The cycle of the story was brilliant honestly but the choices are pretty damn bald and this was not the strongest sequel from the first one. Some decisions were pretty odd but not awful by any means. I’ve seen FAR worse games than this… The actors did an incredible job in each of their roles and I was completely hooked in the story (similar to Red Dead Redemption 2). I would be happy to replay it again and again. These stealth sections that I’ve witnessed is soooo damn good. Period. Just waiting for that Part III cause I feel like we’re not at the end of the woods yet… The only thing I DON’T approve is ‘crunch culture.’ Change that shit Naughty Dog. Seriously…
Graphics: 10/10 (The visuals are out of this world. It's beautiful and brutal to look at)
Music: 10/10 (Listening to the soundtrack and the music has been outdone. Absolutely some tense and some emotional moments to listen and I love it so much.)
Gameplay: 9.5/10 (Some new tweaks in the game play to make it significantly better than the first game and that's saying a lot. New weapons to craft, new dodging mechanic to keep things intense, and the new enemy AIs to keep you on your toes at all times. The gameplay definitely has replay value and the amazing accessibility to keep you coming back for more.)
Story: 8/10 (The second act can drag a lot and has some pacing issues. Great story but not perfect I'm afraid. And the fanbase is extremely divided over the story. But it's a story that doesn't make me angry for some reason. This is not a story for happy times and you are warned of the miserable moments.)
Overall: 9/10 (A must play)
