Government-contracted runs of citizen 'synth' specialists would be a far more workable answer.
They could command fees commensurate with their usefulness and unique abilities, allowing them resources to make the most of a very short life.
Since they could perform jobs alone that would normally require more personnel and resources, more can be done for less.
And because of their high turnover rate and salary demands, synths wouldn't make it hard for Everyday Joe to make a decent living. Besides: historically, companies usually use resources saved by improved efficiency to increase production... not reduce workforce.
