Do you have a system where officers can take their own weapons if they're legal? A few friends of mine in the British army told me that above a certain rank (can't remember which) were given a choice of weapon. A Lnt friend of mine went to the Falklands with an AK47.
Still the British standard weapon is epic, so I don't see why you'd want to take another xD
