Chapter 1: Last Day, Troublesome Morning.
The sun is starting to rise above the Appalachian Mountains. Blowing Rock, a small town in the south of the mountains, resumes its activity. Cars, tent shutters, and neighbors' voices predominate first thing in the morning. In the middle of the village, in an apartment building, a boy is about to start his day.
Alex- You...- said the boy in dreams. Suddenly, an annoying sound resonates throughout the room.
-RIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNGG!! ...
Alex-Huh?... FUCK!!- Alex, irritated, hits the alarm clock as usual to put out the worst enemy of the mornings. Done that, he sits down and stretches as much as possible.-God... everything hurts... - said Alex sorely, touched his arms and torso, the pain was killing him. Its cause? Fight at the local boxing club.
Alex- Come on... to start the day.- Alex was encouraged, leaping out of bed, went to the bathroom, and poured cold water down his face and neck. - Damn, you're done shit Alex, hehe.- he laughed at his reflection. A pee, handwash, and straight to breakfast.
Alex- Mmm... hmhmm... mhmm.- Alex muttered a song while eating his favorite cereals. His eyes passed through the calendar hanging next to the fridge. - Finally it's day five, let's see how I tell the boss.- his worries were already assaulting him.
Satiated, dressed and well prepared, Alex stood in the mirror of the hallway, on his way to the door. - Well, champ. Last day.- Alex left his apartment, not without first leaving a copy of his key, in a hole in the fabric of the wall, where it was torn.- Just in case.- He knew he was going to need it.
Going down the entrance, Alex hurriedly passed in front of the reception, not wanting to run into... -Mr. North!- too late.
Alex -H-Hi, Mr. Chester.- Alex greeted shyly, not knowing where to hide.
Old Chester- North, don't you forget something?- asked the old beaver.
Alex- Emm...- Alex looked at the beaver, who was sitting behind the table, he raised an eyebrow at Alex's indecision. - Yes, about... the rent.-- he said defeated.
The beaver looked at Alex menacingly behind the round glasses he was wearing.- Look, kid. In the three years you've been living in my building, I've forgiven you, eight months!- he jumped furiously, and Alex looked embarrassed to the ground. - Eight months North, of which three were in the first, another three in the second, and this year you have already May and August!- the beaver spat because of the anger. - Today, I imagine you'll charge, so I don't want any excuses, or I'll kick you out of the apartment.
Alex- Ok, throw me out.- Alex replied to the old beaver, to whom he didn't like it.
Old Chester- What!?
Alex- What you heard.
Old Chester- Are you getting cocky, son? Good, you'll see the one waiting for you when you get back.- the old beaver readjusted his glasses, while Alex was on his way to the door.
Alex- Yes, yes. Whatever you say.- he left the building, leaving the old beaver behind.
On the way to work, walking down the main street, Alex took some look at the establishments that decorated the street. Some of them had visited them in these three years, such as Mrs. Fletcher's pastry shop, Mr. Tims's hardware store, or the bar where he used to meet his friends. Looking at the latter, Alex thought if after work he would have time to meet them one last time. "It's not like I'm never going to see them again," Alex thought. While thinking about his stuff, Alex was surprised by two children he knew well.
??-Aleeex!- shouted both children, who surrounded Alex, raising their paws to bump into him's hands.
Alex- Hello, little ones.- said Alex, bumping his hands with the children's paws.
??- Hey, Alex. Shall I tell you what Walter saw yesterday?
Walter- Don't tell Charlie!- cried the little deer, banging the cat's shoulder.
Charlie- AH!- He took revenge by grabbing one of the little horns of the deer.
Walter- Don't pull my horn!- he protested. Alex stood between them to finish the fight.
Alex- Stop it!, What did you see Walter?- Alex asked, stung by curiosity.
Walter- Well. Yesterday, Charlie and I were in the park and we saw two guys kissing each other.- he said blushing.
Alex- Two guys... Kissing each other?
Walter- Yes, a bear and a moose, I think they're in high school, they're older than us.
Charlie- Yeah, very disgusting, ew!- said the disgusted cat.- Imagine if it's disgusting to kiss a girl, to a boy is an aberration!
Alex- And what's the problem?
Walter- Well, Charlie, he yelled things at them and my mother was passing by, she thought I was doing something too and she punished me.
Charlie- Yes, that was awsome, hahaha!- the cat laughed, and the deer looked at him furiously.
Alex- Charlie.- He gave the cat a serious look, drawing his attention. -Don't you think it's unfair?
Charlie- Unfair? Why?
Alex- First, for the boys. I don't think you should care what others do with their lives, unless it directly influences you. Second, you got Walter into a mess you caused. And on top of that, you laugh at him.- Alex frowned at the last thing he said, looking at Charlie. Again, he had pulled that cold side of him, that every now and then, had taken others away from his side.
Charlie- Emm... I... ,d- don't you think it's weird?- he asked intimidatedly.
Alex- What's weird?
Charlie - That two boys kissed each other!- he shouted.
Alex- Charlie, imagine that one day, Walter tells you he's gay. What would you say to him?
Charlie and Walter looked at each other.-What's "gay"?- they both said, Alex was amazed at the innocence of the teenagers.
Alex-That he likes boys.
Walter- What!? I don't like boys!- cried the deer, attracting some look.
Alex- Calm down, I said "imagine." Charlie, what would you say to Walter if one day he told you he is gay? Would you hate him?- Alex stepped hard there.
Charlie- ...- without words, the cat looked at his friend. -No... but, I don't understand.- he finally replied, addressing Alex again.
Alex- What don't you understand?
Charlie- The thing about two boys kissing each other.
Alex- Don't you think it's possible?
Charlie- ...- the cat didn't know what to answer.
Alex- Let's see, your parents, for example, they kiss each other because they love each other, didn't they?
Charlie and Walter- Yes.- they both nodded confused.
Alex- Well, in this world there are males who kiss each other, and females who kiss each other, too.- said that, Alex noticed the surprised faces of the kids.
Charlie and Walter- Really!? - they both said.- And... Why? Walter asked.
Alex- Because they love each other. (Or by sex).- the last did not say.
Charlie- And how does that happen?
Alex- Well... it happens and that's it. The important thing, Charlie, is that it doesn't matter who you love or stop loving, no matter what gender or species it is, if it happens, it's what it is. But, it's not in you or anyone else to decide if it's right or not, all you can do is let it be, but if you judge, judge from the knowledge, not from the prejudice.- he ended up looking at Charlie.
Charlie- Okay...- the cat was looking embarrassed at the ground.- I'm sorry, Walter.- he apologized to his friend.
Walter- N-No, Don't worry.- said blushing.
Alex- You should apologize to those kids, too.
Charlie- Yes, I will, if I meet them.- the cat nodded, and Alex ruffled the cat's hair with his hand.
Walter- What about you, Alex? Do you... do you like boys?- he asked timidly.
Alex- I don't care.- he answered and both boys looked puzzled.
Charlie- You don't care?
Alex- Yes.
Charlie- But, you never had a girlfriend?
Alex was surprised at the kids' love interrogation.-Nope.- he answered instantly, Alex never disliked confessing that he never had anything with anyone. Why would he dislike him now?
Charlie- Hmm, that's weird.
Alex- Yes, I am.
The trio reached a climb in the street, where the kids separated going to the high school. Alex said goodbye to them and walked to the building where he worked.
