Exaggeration with material is not uncommon, you know. Maybe you could lose the lower part, or try adding decending shading.
Suggestions
1. Make the leaf cast a nice shadow darkening everything that's bellow it.
2. Tom - brightest; bottom - darkest. This light/dark contrast throughout the picture might do.
